55Great spot!
55Very spacious place, great little back area to explore. Everything we needed was there and we were given very detailed instructions on how to get there. Julian had so much fun, we’ll definitely be coming back.
55Both of my dogs enjoyed their off leash romp around. They especially appreciated the little dipping tub on this warm afternoon.
55Beautiful country yard off the beaten path. Would definitely visit again!
55Amazing Sniff Spot! Backs up to a beautiful natural area, and my dog who’s an avid squirrel and bird lover is endlessly entertained. Plenty of space for his zoomies! He’s an escape artist, but any areas in the fence with holes have materials to cover them up so I have had no issues with him here. Hard to believe this spots in town- it’s a hidden gem.
55Great Spot! Lots of shade, sun and plenty of places to sniff.
55Best sniffspot yet!!! So quiet and so peaceful!!My dog enjoyed exploring and roaming all the 5 acres. There were no mosquitos. The orange trees on property were bearing fruit and they were delicious! A real taste of Florida. I will be back for sure.
55Wonderful location with very gracious hosts. They have a great setup to make it an easy worry free play session. Their dogs were in the house and barked but were not obnoxious or a distraction.
55I’ve been to Barkley’s sniffspot probably close to 10 times now and it’s always a pleasure. Thank you!!

Description

We have both a large FENCED space behind the house and the rest of the 5 acres PARTIALLY FENCED with shaded trails and cleared out/mowed/grass underbrush. We do have lots of mosquitos during the warmer months but bug spray is available to all guests in the fenced area in a blue locking box on the small table. The property is quiet and surrounded by the sounds of nature for a great place to relax and enjoy time in the woods. Lots of tree and shade cover but with plenty of open space underneath for running around, playing fetch, or whatever you would like to do with your dog! Chickens and Quail are the only livestock animals present on the property and they are only directly behind the house in a few small secure coops that can be easily blocked off from the rest of the general fenced space to keep you and your dog happy but people are more than welcome to expose your dogs to the birds through the caging if you would like (they are use to my dog constantly checking on them). I recently purchased this home lining the NE side of paynes prairie (SE side of Gainesville) in April 2022 as a fixer upper while in school so I am continually working on the house and property to make it nicer, cleaner, and more welcoming to everyone. We are ~15 min from UF and downtown Gainesville. The property is 5 acres of mixed light woods with cleared underbrush in a pine/mixed forest with a ~0.5+ acre short fully fenced large yard space (~3ft plus old electric wire running up to ~5/6ft so may not be great for escape artist dogs that like to jump out but should contain dogs who do not try to jump out as the fence base is solid) with another small pen area located behind the house inside the fenced space to place other dogs or items out of the way if needed but this area does contain a compost barrel. There is plenty of room to play fetch and for dogs to run around at full speed. The fenced space sits back behind the house and was an old fenced garden area to keep deer out. The photos of that area have the most sandy mixed grass in the pictures, largest full sun and slightly sandy area on the property but still containing lots of trees around the perimeter of the fencing for shade and is generally in full shade in the afternoon/evening. Most of the fenced area is kept mowed with small wildflower patches left up occasionally during warmer months and fruit trees/plants that have recently been planted and some with protective deer fencing around them. We also have citrus/orange trees covering the property and feel free to pick some to-go (some of the trees are sweet and some are very sour like the tree behind the shed next to the house so give them a test before biting in!) The space is only used by my 2.5 yr old Border collie mix and occasionally my parents border collie on a regular basis so the space would be great as a large fenced space for someone needing a safe fenced private dog location. There are chickens and quail in a subsection of the fenced area directly behind the house but a gate can be closed to this area. They are in an area that was fenced in to connect the house to the main yard space but can easily be closed off with the gate into the main fenced yard if it has not been done by me beforehand. There are water hoses available and have a small livestock water trough in the shade of the fenced area as a dog pool, feel free to dump and refill as needed. There are chairs for guest and a trash can or trash bag (old feed bags or plastic grocery bags hung on a tree along the fence to the left when entering the fenced area) for any trash disposal. I will have some dog poop bags set in the plastic blue bin with the chair and folding table for easy access if you would like to pick up after your pet if its not off to the side along a fence line so we can avoid stepping in any poop out in the open while watering plants. 🚨The mosquitos and ticks can be quite plentiful here 🚨 so be prepared for bugs BUT bug spray is available for guest to use in the same blue plastic container in the fenced space sitting on the folding table by the chair. If it is running low or out when you need it, please message me and let me know so I can make sure to replenish the supply. The rest of the property is not fully fenced (down in some locations from nature) but is a beautiful pine and mixed forest on a down sloping hill into the woods. The areas under the trees are generally kept mowed a couple times a year so plenty of space to run around and follow the small trails. ⚠️warning: there are bee hives located on the west side in the center/back of the property directly west from the large bonfire pit but do not cause us any issues, just do not let dogs run in between hives or mess with the hives and they should leave you alone and cause no issues. If there are any questions or concerns before, please reach out and ask and I am happy to answer any questions and accommodate guest as I can! We are located at the very dead end of 35th where the end of road red signs are located. Take a left onto the dirt road and continue driving past the blue 2 story home and follow the driveway up the small hill to the front of the second house. The property is the second house on the dirt road so following the big white "3620 next driveway!" sign on the tree to your left after driving over the small culvert (you will now be on the property at this point). Keep driving past the sign up the hill and there is another small white sign on the ground with 3620 letters written on it at the driveway entrance to the front of the house. Parking is around the back right side of the house in the grass so pull into and house driveway and pass the house between the shed with the jellyfish painted on it and the house around to the back side. Pass the second smaller shed and park to the right along the brush line just past the house and sheds. If you continue walking the direction you pulled in to park, down the driveway behind the house the way you entered, it leads you through a set of railroad tie gate posts with an empty old covered shed space on the right to enter the rest of the partially fenced area (property line goes straight back along the back side of the covered space and the old fence posts/ fence lines are the property boundaries). We ask that people do not take a vehicle back there as terrain can be a bit rough and tight unless needed or for emergencies. The back of the property drops down a hill and there may be some muddy low spots directly at the bottom of the hill along the east fence line if we have had a lot of rain recently. The west property line starts along the bushes and water overflow/culvert you drive over on your way in just before the big white tree sign and goes to the east side where you will be parking. The house is one end of the property and then it goes straight back toward the North behind the house where you will see an old down fence line to encompass the 5 acres. If you end up in a fully open pasture area, you have made it onto a neighbors property. The neighbors are very friendly if they are out and the last house on our dirt road does have 2 dogs but usually won't see or hear them. If you wish to modify your visit, please update the change before you run out of your current visit time or you will have to leave and come back for a following booking due to sniffspot liability and insurance coverage rules. You can figure out how to make these changes by visiting their website at https://help.sniffspot.com/article/63-how-to-modify-or-cancel-a-reservation

Hazards

We line Paynes Priaire Preserve so please be aware of all wildlife like racoon, deer, snakes, and other critters. There are a lot of mosquitoes here and we offer bug spray in the fenced area by the chairs and folding table in a blue plastic container. We ask you do not kill any animals including snakes and reach out immediately to me if you locate one of concern. I work with reptiles and can safely secure and move anything of concern as it does occasionally happen but rarely and we aim to protect the wildlife around the property. This spot has a water feature, make sure to review these guidelines for visiting spots with water before visiting: https://help.sniffspot.com/article/167-how-to-keep-your-dog-safe-around-pools-and-water

Quail eggs!$5

The quail are kept on the property directly behind the house and regular produce eggs for me. They are cleaned and refrigerated after collection and are great for dog food toppers or enrichment snack. I have hatched and raised all my quail from a local friends birds and are kept in 2 groups off the ground to keep their space clean on a regular basis.

The property was a bit hard to navigate, but the host left amazing instructions to follow. Only removed a star for the amount of ticks that we saw, the host did warn of this issue, but it was worse than I expected. Overall, nice property!

Host replied: I'm sorry it was difficult to navigate. Would you be able to elaborate what seemed confusing so I can be more aware of that for the future? And yes, I am sorry, the ticks are terrible. I have heard people all over Gainesville complaining about them and that it is predicted to be one of the worst years for ticks. It also doesn't help that we are surrounded by paynes priaire and have tons of wildlife come through the property. I unfortunately have no control over this and is why I supply big spray which if applied around shoes/pant bottoms and arms well, this tends to keep them off along with avoiding touching brush. I regularly check my dog for ticks as this is a common thing here with this giant wildlife habitat around us which there are so many benefits of having but these are unfortunately some of the unavoidable drawbacks. It is a part of enjoying the land and I strive to leave it as chemical free since we have bees on the property during the summer months and tons of other wildlife we regularly see on camera and in person. If you have something you prefer for your dog as a bug spray, I always love to hear recommendations and ideas as I like to give these options for people to use on themselves and their dogs safely here.

And sorry about the dogs making some boise that day! Usually my boy is at my parents with their dog but I had them both that day and they were not happy I left them inside when I was out haha and they saw friends.

Hello, I am currently a PhD student at UF working on my degree in equine genetics. I graduated with my BS in Animal Science at UF in 2018 and currently own a small animal business and updating the new home I purchased. I was born and raised in Gainesville and only left for 2 years for school but came home in 2016 to finish my undergraduate degree in Animal science. I am working on fixing up the home while juggling my other responsibilities and have not used the rest of the property yet for my plans, leaving it open for others to enjoy and help support me working on the property and house while living on a graduate student income.

North Star Ranch Private Dog Park In Archer

Hello, We would like to welcome our dog friends to our private fully fenced wooded dog park we named The North Star Ranch. The North Star is positioned right over our entrance, and you might see it if you stay at the ranch late. Our ranch currently has no land improvements, which means that you’ll have to bring your own water, snacks, poo bags, and flashlights if you book early or late in the day. Also we have no trash collection, so please take your waste home with you. This is what we do as well. Consider a visit to our ranch a visit to nature that has been fenced in for your dogs’ convenience. And as in all Florida woods, there are some safety concerns you need to be aware of before your reservation. There are more or less visible stumps and vines all over the ranch. There are also some prickly cacti, buckthorn bushes and brambles. Tree logs and trunks have been arranged in some areas as edging for trails. The ranch is a work in progress and we are very slowly cutting prickly plants back to where they aren’t in dogs’ faces, but it’s taking us a while. So be prepared for an encounter with a gentle Florida wilderness. Long pants and closed toed shoes are very much needed! We also suggest tick spray if you’re worried about them. We find that in winter time they are very rare. There is a back gate at the ranch and we don’t suggest venturing out of, as the back of the property is NOT fenced, and trails are unkempt. Please stay in the fenced-in area only for your safety! We hope you and your dog enjoys lots of sniffing while you’re either strolling along or sitting down in one of our picnic chairs. We usually turn them sideways when we leave so they don’t collect rainwater. There are a couple cones and tires and poles around the sitting area and you’re welcome to rearrange them for your dog’s needs. We hope you enjoy our ranch as much us we do!

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IN ENTIRETY BEFORE BOOKING: This property is 1.7 acres total, but has approximately 1.5 acres of usable space for dog recreation. __________ Description The front yard is mostly shaded and grassy. The north yard has been planted in native plant species--please do not allow dogs to dig in this area or tear up the delicate native plants as it has taken a lot of time, money, and energy to semi-restore this area for native wildlife and pollinators. Its a great area for sniffing, running, and playing games of "ball search." There is a garden on the SW side of the property that is not fenced off from the rest of the yard, and a large mulched area behind it. Please keep dogs out of the garden beds, but running through the mulched area behind it is fine. _______ Wildlife There is a gopher tortoise burrow along the fenceline near the mulched area. Gopher tortoises are a state threatened species. It is a crime to disturb this state protected species, and dogs are one of the biggest threats to their populations. If ANY disturbance is found near the gopher tortoise burrow, the host WILL contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and pursue appropriate venues to press charges. KEEP DOGS AWAY FROM THE GOPHER TORTOISE AND ITS BURROW. The host of this property does not allow any harassment of native wildlife (with the exception of gray squirrels*) including moles, pocket gophers, snakes, and the resident gopher tortoise. *Chasing gray squirrels is alright, as they have become a nuisance to the solar panels and roof.* No venomous snakes have been seen on the property for at least 2 years, when the current owners bought the home, but the host recommends staying away from the mostly unused blue shed in the backyard, next to which there is wood piled, as this makes good escape cover for snakes, though none have been seen in this area yet. _________________________ Dog Wash and Training Area The chainlink fenced area behind the house is a training and wash area. There is some agility equipment laying in the porch and an area of rocks where you can bathe your dog. There is a hose and usually soap on the windowsill. A water station is also available in this area, though you may have to turn on the faucet. _________________ Dog Poop Cleanup A poop scoop is available in the dog wash area and a small, white poop trash bin is next to it. If the bin is full, or poop is far from this small cleanup station, use poop bags instead. Poop bags are available in the black, diamond-shaped dispenser to the left of the garage. Please place used poop bags in the large black trash bin by the gate on your way out. Other than that, enjoy your time here!
