A New Leash on Life Pet Rescue and Transport

#88 in United States, #9 in Oregon, #3 in Eugene

Our love for all animals, big and small, runs deep. Our rescue efforts began while healing from the sadness of losing our 13-year-old Golden Retriever, Ruby. The healing began with a phone call from a friend nearly 1,000 miles away: Can you help us? It was that desperate plea that opened our eyes to a problem that isn't going away anytime soon. Pet overpopulation, animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment affect all of us and the communities we live in. Through our transports, we are able to save these animals from being euthanized in high kill shelters by carrying them to the safety of our rescue network. Dog Rescue is all about teamwork. Each life saved represents countless hours of collaboration between volunteers and rescue organizations. Currently, our network spans the I-5 Corridor, from the Mexican to Canadian borders. Here, these various agencies provide the training, medical care, and fostering to help find a happy, healthy, and loving home for the dogs to live in for the rest of their lives. As of April 2024, over 11,800 dogs (and many cats) have been transported. In addition to transport, we work with several pet food suppliers to secure donated food for animals in our community. Donated food, supplies, and treats are distributed to food banks, shelters, rescue agencies, churches, veterans and the homeless. In the sweet spirit of Ruby, we wake up every day with the hope of giving these animals a new leash on life.

Golden Bond Rescue of Oregon. — Sniffspot

Golden Bond Rescue of Oregon.

#98 in United States, #13 in Oregon, #2 in Salem

Golden Bond Rescue is a volunteer run, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of retrievers. Our mission is to find caring, adoptive homes for retrievers and retriever mixes in need and to educate the public to prevent the homeless retrievers of the future. Retrievers in need of new homes come from a variety of circumstances. Some come to us due to compelling family situations such as death, divorce, family illness, relocation or economic hardship. Others are released to rescue because of behavior problems due to lack of exercise and poor understanding of the needs of the breed. Since our beginnings in 1991, we have successfully placed over 3,500 dogs with new loving families. We would like to remind anyone interested in adopting a retriever that there is no source (including breeders, kennels, humane societies, rescue organizations) for a guaranteed perfect or pre-trained dog. Like many rescue organizations, we offer the benefits of being able to provide dogs who are already spayed or neutered, who have had a sound fundamental health examination, and whose temperament is fairly well known (since they have all lived with our foster families). Some of our dogs have not had a loving family in the past, but many have. Some may have behavioral problems, but many do not. And some need special medical care, just as most any dog will eventually. Many of our dogs need some level of training. All of our dogs need significant amounts of time, attention, patience, and love to adjust to their forever homes. Golden Bond Rescue is a resource for people who would like to give retrievers or retriever mixes a second chance in life. Golden Bond Rescue identifies a "retriever" as any breed that falls under the American Kennel Club's (AKC) retriever classification: golden retriever, Labrador retriever, Chesapeake Bay retriever, curly-coated retriever, flat-coated retriever, and Nova Scotia duck-tolling retriever. For more information about each of these breeds, please use this link RETRIEVERS.

Displaced Pets Rescue — Sniffspot

Displaced Pets Rescue

#100 in United States, #15 in Oregon, #8 in Portland

Displaced Pets Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to rescuing Pomeranians and other petite breeds located in NW Oregon and Washington. Our mission is to help Little Dogs, that are under 10 pounds, whether they come from the shelter or from an owner surrender. Loss of income, home, illness, relocation, divorce, re-zoning are all things that happen in people's lives and we provide a safety net to keep these little guys from being turned into a shelter. We work to find these dogs loving new homes, and to provide interim socialization, training and Vet care that they need. We work to educate current owners and to decide the best solution for their situation. Sometimes a frustrating situation can be solved with some caring training and assistance. Where necessary we will take in rescue dogs that will be placed in loving pet homes. Our resources are limited as we are completely self sustained, so the numbers of rescues we can take each year is limited. Dogs come to us from a variety of sources, including local shelter and individuals. We only accept dogs which we believe have the potential, after living in our care, and working with us for some time, to be successfully placed in a new home. We work with each animal to develop the confidence it will need to fit into a new relationship. We work with the dog and new owner to ensure that the new relationship is successful. Prospective adoptive parents are interviewed, and references are checked to ensure that we have choose the best new owner possible. The potential "adoptee" must meet their new family to ensure that they are adequately acquainted in my environment before going to a new home. All of our rescues are spayed or neutered and current on their vaccines. The pricing you will find on these rescues may very depending on the dogs age, health, and the Vet care involved. Our minimum placement fee is $200, for an advanced senior with health concerns. Most will place at $400. Puppies under one year our donation is $500, Many times the placement fee for a dog does not cover their vet bills, let alone food, electricity, water, bedding, cleaning products and all of the other things that these kids need. We are a young organization with a limited donor base and no government funding, we rely on adoption fees and donations to support our mission. The largest consideration is an attempt to recover the funds spent so as to pass them on to the next needy fur-baby. Additional donations are greatly appreciated.

    Sammie’s Senior Dog Sanctuary

Sammie was our first family dog. She was our wild child, always ready to play soccer, chase down a ball, and run like the wind. Sammie loved all humans and was the best big sister to her dog siblings. She had back-to-back knee surgeries by the age of 3yo but recovered quickly and remained active for many years after. Over time, Sammie became deaf and blind. Her old bones started to choose a warm bed over playing ball, but her devotion to her family never wavered. She was truly our good ol’ girl! Sammie was 15yo when we held her for the last time. It was an honor and a privilege to care for our Sammie, especially in her golden years. Which is an act of love too many older dogs do not receive. The amount of dogs over the age of 7 that are abandoned or surrendered, solely for their age is truly heartbreaking. We established Sammie’s Senior Dog Sanctuary to care for those seniors. We know age is never an indicator of the love they have to give. We are dedicated to their well-being and making sure their time with us is safe, stress-free, and full of compassion. Robin is a registered veterinary technician (RVT) with several years of experience caring for all animals and is Fear Free certified. Our family has spent the majority of our lives loving our pets unconditionally until their remaining days.

They are given pet food, which they then distribute out to other rescues/individuals who need it. I live in Lane county, where they are - they have donated food to me which I then give to rescues in outlying areas or to the Community Sharing, which distributes food baskets and other needed items to those in need.

A New Leash on Life Pet Rescue and Transport

In 2001, a group of concerned, passionate people knew that the animals of Douglas County needed and deserved the very best care. After a year of working through details, Saving Grace was deeded the land from Douglas County in June 2002 and took over shelter operations from the County in July. Since that time, Saving Grace has saved the lives of over 30,000 animals! From the beginning, Saving Grace’s focus was on adoptions and providing quality care. An Animal Healthy Advisory Committee of local veterinarians was formed to provide guidance on populations, practices for disease control and vaccination protocols. The organization actively promoted spay/neuter, and in 2007 opened the onsite spay/neuter clinic. Since that time, Saving Grace has performed over 7,300 surgeries.

    Rogue Valley Humane Society

Fifty years ago homeless animals in the Rogue Valley faced a death sentence if no one adopted them within a few days. In 1965 a small group of animal lovers decided to try to change that, and they started a rescue to give homeless, abused, and abandoned pets in Josephine County a safe haven without a time limit. The Rogue Valley Humane Society grew out of this grassroots effort. RVHS was incorporated in 1965 as a non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to providing love, food, shelter, and medical attention to these animals until they can find new lifetime homes. Thirty-five years later the current facility opened with the capacity to house 14 dogs and 80 cats plus litters of puppies and kittens. Our main building houses all of the cats plus the office, laundry and medical room. The separate kennel building has indoor/outdoor runs. The Robert E. and Jennifer Murphy Canine Care Building was built in 2013 to house newborn puppies and any dog needing a quiet place to heal. Throughout the years we’ve had one singular goal: to improve the lives of animals. We are proud to show RVHS to visitors so they can see first-hand the standard of care we give to every homeless companion animal, from an elderly, blind dog to a day old kitten. The Rogue Valley Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. We provide shelter, food, medical care and personal attention for hundreds of homeless dogs and cats every year. We are here for the young and cuddly, the old, sick and neglected, and everything in between. We receive no county, state or federal funds and rely solely on individual and foundation grants to carry out our mission.

We are dedicated to providing adequate shelter for homeless animals, uniting families with their lost pets, and finding abandoned animals their forever families. These may be dogs and cats that have been abandoned, lost, or even surrendered to us by their owners because of difficult circumstances. We are not a no-kill animal shelter. However, as long as animals are healthy and not aggressive we keep animals up for adoption as long as possible. We do not have a specific time frame for keeping an animal. In fact, we have had dogs and cats in our facility many months prior to adoption. It is our goal to place dogs and cats in loving, responsible, committed permanent homes. Our adoption process includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities of bringing a dog or cat into their homes and lives.

Sanctuary One respectfully acknowledges the Latgawa and Takelma People in particular who have stewarded the land our care farm exists with throughout the generations. It is our hope at Sanctuary One that we are faithful stewards continuing this love and care of land. At Sanctuary One, people of all ages have the opportunity to volunteer on a real working farm and experience nature’s healing power firsthand. We offer educational tours that open people’s hearts and minds. We invite groups from schools and youth-serving nonprofit organizations to visit the farm for fresh air, exercise and hands-on service-learning. We mentor interns who dream of becoming the next generation of care farmers. We promote the ethics of mindful, sustainable living. And we provide a safe, loving home to rescued farm animals and pets. It’s all part of a practice called care farming. Benefits of Care Farms are wide ranging for people, and at Sanctuary One, we ensure healing is mutual, for people and animals and the earth. Care farms like Sanctuary One demonstrate how farming for health can be an affordable, natural and effective means of healing people. They serve as models for treating animals humanely and honoring their intrinsic physical and spiritual value. And they illustrate how the environment that sustains us all can be steadily improved through organic and permaculture-inspired farming practices. At Sanctuary One, we envision a future where care farms are as commonplace in the United States as they are in Europe. For example, in the Netherlands there are more than 1,000 established care farms. Great Britain has hundreds, and there are dozens more in other European countries. We hope to enliven and motivate our visitors at Sanctuary One and, ultimately, inspire more Americans to start up care farms in their communities.

    Jack RussellJack Russell
I became involved with Jack Russell Rescue OWII after losing my 19 year old beloved companion. I am dedicated to only owning dogs/cats that need homes, either through rescues or needing rehoming. I had intended to adopt, however, after months of seeing so many beautiful pups in need of a home, I was unable to choose a companion. I asked if I could perhaps become a foster, so that I would be able to not only provide a much needed service, but potentially find my next forever pup. It seemed like a win-win. I completed my application, was approved, and awaited my first placement. Over the next few months, I became a part of the process and FINALLY received my first placement. I learned that rescues work at a very fast pace, constantly arranging transports, setting up fosters, getting vet appointments scheduled, providing advice and support to all involved. Ironically, my first placement was a tiny Chihuahua that had been transported from California. With the exception of my late rat terrier, I had only owned large dogs, 50 to 110 pounds. I would have never imagined a Chihuahua in my home. I came to understand that, although the rescue is called Jack Russell Rescue, they have huge hearts and work to facilitate the future of countless breeds. When it came time to list that little bundle of joyful energy who had taken over the house, even engaging with my 50 pound loner rehomed grumpy old man, I asked if I could be added to the potential list of Adopters. And that was the beginning of my foster experience. In 2 years, I have had the opportunity to be involved with fostering for JRROWIi, understanding the importance and value o rescues and fosters in saving, socializing, rehabilitating and so much more. My formerly somewhat quiet home has become a place of bustling activity and joy. I am often been asked how I am able to adopt out a pup who I have fostered and created a bond with. I say, my place is to prepare each one for a better home than I can provide, their forever home, where they will be given the love and attention they so deserve and only by finding the perfect home am I able to take on another pup who is in need. My little Chihuahua, aNubis, is the candy striper and welcoming committee to each foster that comes through, helping with the transition that so many rescues need to come to trust a human once again. I am so grateful for the opportunity being a foster with JRROWII has afforded me in being a part of providing a solution to a growing problem and doing good works for good dogs...and ALL dogs are good.

Please please please do your research on who you want to align yourselves with and promote. Dogs here are often forgotten, kept in unsanitary conditions, and denied medical care. There is a reason that there are a lot of outbreaks of various illnesses. Previous owners are told that dogs will stay forever and then are quickly passed off to Family Dogs New Life (which Asher house works with and just bought the owners a property). Ask what the local ACOs think of them.

This rescue focuses mostly on rescuing pups from high kill shelters in CA; and is 100% volunteer, all donations and fees go directly to paying vet bills, supplies, and transport costs. We started out as fosters, but soon became foster fails, as we fell in love with our little girl. Before any dog is adopted, while in foster care all medical issues are taken care of, the rescue covers all costs, provides food, crates, etc, whatever is needed for the pup. Volunteers help verify references, and the founders place pups in the home they feel is a best fit - not first come first served. We plan to foster (and probably foster fail) again.
