Description

Almost an acre of pastureland overlooking Jacoby Creek Valley for dogs to sniff, roam, play, and most of all be off leash and in nature. Come with your dog alone or bring some friends and dog pals (up to 6 total) to romp and chase and play while you relax. There are some toys and obstacles, water, and lots to dig. Please bring your own balls. There may be cattle in the adjoining field below, occasionally deer though rarely in the daytime. There is a seasonal water channel that many dogs love and it can be muddy. Chairs are set for a pastoral view, particularly lovely at sunset. People and cars may go by on the driveway. The spot is all yours when you are there and with respect to reactive dogs, I won't greet you unless we set that up in advance. I want the dogs to feel that this is their space and we won't intrude. If your plans change you can cancel or reschedule up to 2 hours prior to your reservation through the app but it does not allow changes after that. The new picnic table is meant for your use, please keep dogs with muddy paws off the table. Please no smoking or using while visiting. Enjoy!

HOST NOTE

Uneven ground for walking on and dogs may dig holes. Humboldt has ticks in grasslands seasonally, so check dogs and yourself especially in the spring. This is pastureland in a semi rural area and may contain prickly plants like thistle and fox tails which are common in the area. Stinging insects in the summer, especially around flowering blackberries There's a seasonal runoff stream on the west side that gets muddy. The big tree drops walnuts in the fall which are not good for chewing/eating. I pick them up every morning but if you see some, please dispose in the poop pail. Deer are rarely present during the day but should be shooed away (not by dogs) before entering if they are there. If your dog digs a hole, please use the shovel by the gate to fill it up to prevent injuries.

We are retired with more land than we need for ourselves and love the idea of a self-serve place where dogs can come and play and their peeps can play or relax. Our daughter introduced us to sniffspots and we see how her dogs love to have free time and space in nature, whether they run and play or just lay about. She sees value in them making their own choices and they are happy creatures.

In addition the "mirco climate" is more ideal with less fog and more blue sky days than downtown Eureka or Arcata. Not only will your dog enjoy this large open space, we've added a bench and awning (coming soon) to keep you comfortable during your visit. This location is very ideal when visiting the Headwaters Forest Reserve just one minute up the road! Some guests like to come first to exercise their dogs before taking them on leash into Headwaters. This 1/2 acre open space is rough; not manicured, but better than it used to be! It is a work in progress. :o) Bringing and Removing POOP bags is ESSENTIAL. Once inside the heavy gate, you will find a long grassy driveway leading into a large undeveloped parcel. Please feel free to drive in and park at the north end of the driveway. The fence on the east side of the driveway may not be solid as wildlife pass through that way. If the neighbor's large wood gate open on the east side of the driveway, you may close it, but PLEASE open it on your way out. The large parcel is fully enclosed. There is also a 4' wide 'run' along the south and west sides. Please send a message with your reservation with a description number of your dog(s) -- and it would be helpful if you tell me how you are using the space.
