Location

Description

Not fenced but not immediately bordered by anything but forest on all sides. The property is 12 acres with mostly open or treed space. There is a small beach area with water calm enough for dogs to swim and fetch sticks. We have picnic tables and chairs that you can use but please pick up after yourself, your dog, and your kids. There is now a trashcan provided on the beach for your convenience.

Cleanliness

100% of guests said this spot was as clean as expected during their visit.

Hazards

There has been wildlife spotted such as turkey and deer. Some of the wooded space has briars. There is a large part that is similar to a rugged hiking trail which means there is potential to encounter poison ivy and other hazards. In the summer time there could be snakes (although I've not spotted any) and because of the location near the river, there are driftwood piles at some places. The river does have current but rapids are both above and small ones below. If the river is high, I would use caution and suggest a life jacket.

We really love this spot, we drive an hour from Asheville to here, and this spot make us excited, especially the river, the dog love it so much, I made an extension for another hour. We will back for sure

We’ve been to this spot many times now and it’s our dogs’ favorite! We lucked out with perfect weather for today’s visit and the dogs swam, fetched and explored the entire time. Our older dogs especially love the beach area with easy access to wade into the river. Can’t wait to visit again!

This was our second time at Melanie’s spot and we can’t wait to go back again. A lovely secluded spot on the river with ample spots to relax, go for a mozy in the woods, let the pup take a little swim, or let the pup run free in the clearing. Melanie even took the extra step and left a few supplies we may have needed but didn’t think of- bug spray, towels, waters, treats. The pup loved it and didn’t want to get back in the car when it was time to leave. Hoping to make it back again soon!

Host replied: I love letting other people and pups enjoy our little sanctuary! I hope you come back and get to experience all of the seasons. Each one has something special to offer at the river 😊

This is hands down the best Sniffspot we’ve ever been to! The host is amazing- she leaves little baskets of dog (and human) treats, bug spray, towels and balls for the pups. There’s tons of space for your dogs to run/swim/play I cannot recommend it enough!

Host replied: Thank you so much! Y’all are welcome here any time 😄

Beautiful spot on river. Owner had everything we needed for a comfortable visit, including snacks (for dogs and people!), water, and even a towel.

Host replied: Thank you! Come back anytime :)

This was our 2nd visit to 12 Acres. My 1 year old pup loves this Sniffspot. She has so much room to explore and frolic. There is so much more to check out so we will be back. It makes me happy when my pup is happy! Melanie, thank you!

Host replied: It makes me happy to be able to share this space with you.

Beautiful warm, sunny day at the river! Brilliant location for a Sniffspot. Thanks for sharing!

Such a great place. Best sniff spot around !

Meet your host

We have recently acquired this land and I am happy to offer this opportunity for people who want their dogs to have a chance to run free. It’s a great space and my dogs have thoroughly explored all the random piles of driftwood. They would be happy to show your dogs around or would be fine to give them their own space!

A few Announcements: 1) 2/27- It came to my attention recently that in the back corner of the yard there is a small gap between my fence and the neighbor's fence where a dog could potentially get through. This came to my attention after a recent visitor was there with their dogs and my neighbor came out on their deck with their 2 smaller dogs and my visitor's dogs wanted to go after the neighbor's 2 smaller dogs. That was the 1st time I heard of this gap or anything like that happening, but I did see the gap that they were talking about, where it's possible their dogs could have gotten through if they weren't guarding their dogs from getting through. It will be a few days before I'll be able to address this as far as getting it fixed so in the meantime, this is a warning that there is a potential gap in this part of the fencing. (Bottom left corner.) **Book at your own risk.** I will update this once I've been able to secure this hole. Thank you for your patience. 2) There was a recent visitor who did not clean up after their dog. If I knew who it was, it would show up in my review of them. This is a reminder that you are expected to clean up after your dog. Thank you. Recommendations: I recommend that if you book an evening time, that you come prepared with a good flashlight, especially in the fall/winter when it's getting dark earlier, and check the time of sunset. Even with the lights on, it will be dark in most parts of the yard, and I can't guarantee the lights will be on for every evening visit. The space: A wide open space with rolling hills for your dogs to play, while you enjoy the view. *The sprinkler is actually a garden hose that is a "soaker" hose. It sprays water out of it like a sprinkler. There are plenty of sticks you can throw for the dog to fetch. The location is 5 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 5 minutes to Downtown Asheville, and close to the Folk Art Center. The newly renovated Haw Creek library and playground, Creekside Tavern, and High Five Coffee are just down the street. You can also walk to the Haw Creek Farmer's Market from here on Fridays, 3-6 pm. You can walk straight from to the Mountain to Sea trail from here without having to drive, and hike to Lunchbox rock (seen in pictures here.) I included the porch pictures so you could see the sunset. :) There is hand sanitizer, sunblock and bug spray under the stairs, under the side of the bottom step that you are welcome to use.
