Description

Welcome to “Maplewood Farm” Dog Park -- a peaceful 5-acre nature escape in south Maplewood near Battle Creek, just minutes from I-94 and McKnight. This is still undeveloped farmland tucked into the suburbs, with rolling hills, mature trees, wooded trails, open field space, and natural wildlife. It has a different feel from a typical backyard spot and gives dogs a private place to run, sniff, explore, and decompress away from crowded dog parks. For history buffs, the property also has the only standing barn in Maplewood, built in 1896, still in its original form and in use. The main fenced play area is approx. 60 ft x 100 ft and is great for off-leash play, fetch, tug with the spring pole, and burning off energy. There is also a water-play area with a splash pad and above-head sprinkler/mister, plus a sprayer if you want to rinse or bathe your pup on the grass. Just outside the fenced area, I’ve added a cozy campfire seating area overlooking the dog park. Evening guests who book 1.5+ hours are welcome to use it at no extra cost when conditions allow -- a peaceful way to relax while your pup plays nearby. For a good visit, I recommend starting in the fenced area, then leashing your pup for a slower sniff walk around the rest of the property (imagine an entire city block). From the fenced area, you can follow the back gate into the wooded trail system, head toward the back cul-de-sac area, loop back toward the campfire area and barn, then continue through the mature forest trail. I’ve also installed several runner trolley systems along the trail for semi-free roaming, giving dogs a safe, guided way to sniff and explore under the trees. From there, you can circle back toward the open field. Signs are posted to help guide you. This is a natural, dog-friendly space, so dogs are welcome to explore, climb on log and wood chip piles, chew or pull on sticks, sniff around, and enjoy the property in whatever way feels safe and appropriate to you. I’m not precious about the landscape here. My priority is your pup having a good, safe visit. Best times to visit: mornings and early evenings are usually great for active dogs, especially during warmer weather. Afternoons can still be enjoyable with shade, water play, and wooded trails for slower sniff walks. Early evenings are one of my favorite times here -- you can enjoy the sunset, relax by the campfire, or unwind while your dog plays and explores. If I’m home, I may briefly welcome first-time visitors once your dog is safely in the fenced area. If you prefer a no-contact visit, just message me ahead of time and I won’t greet you. As a dog lover and builder, I’m always improving the space and adding more dog-friendly features. I just opened this spot in May 2026 and welcome your feedback, especially ideas for making the space better for groups, trainers, or special dog gatherings. 🐾 🐾 Valeng and paw friends 🐾 🐾

HOST NOTE

Highwood Ave is set back from most main play/run areas, but it can be busier during morning and evening traffic. The backroad trail/trolley line rounds back toward Highwood Ave and is roped off to prevent vehicles from entering. Because we are still in the suburbs, you may occasionally see or hear other dogs nearby. There are daily dog walkers on Highwood Ave, and the house across the street has two well-trained dogs with an electric fence. They will not cross the street, but your dog may notice them if they are outside. When using the trolley zipline system, please clip your dog directly to the trolley line using a secure harness or collar attachment point, rather than attaching a leash to it. Leashes can wrap around your pup more easily than the trolley system’s line. Wildlife may be present or scented on the property, including deer, rabbits, squirrels, field moles, birds, and other animals. Please supervise dogs with high prey drive closely. Trails and fields may have burrs/stick-tights and wood nettle.

Overnight dog boarding may be available for dogs who are a good fit after a meet and greet. This includes care in a home setting on my 5-acre property, with outdoor play, potty breaks, attention, and supervised time in the fenced play area. Best for dogs who can settle indoors and do well with a slower introduction to resident dogs. Please message me before booking.

Private Trainer Use1 credit

For trainers, rescue groups, reactive-dog practice, breed meetups, or small private group use. Larger use of the property may be available by request. Pricing depends on number of dogs, number of people, length of booking, setup needs, and whether I need to be present or provide additional support.

Pup Party Setup35 credits

A simple setup for a dog birthday, gotcha day, or small playdate with dogs who already know each other. Includes seating, water, dog-friendly treats, and a designated area for photos or gathering. Great for celebrating your pup while giving them space to run, sniff, and play in a private setting.

Dogs are welcome to be off-leash inside the main fenced play area. Please check that gates are closed and latched before releasing dogs, and close and latch all gates behind you. Guests are responsible for supervising and controlling their dogs at all times. Please use your judgment and keep dogs close enough to remain safe and under control. Please clean up after your dogs before leaving. Courtesy poop bags are available. No digging, excessive barking, fence fighting, fence jumping, chasing wildlife, or destructive behavior. You are welcome to walk around the property, including near the house, barn, workshop, sheds, driveway work areas, equipment areas, trailers, and vehicles. Please be respectful of these spaces and use caution around any equipment or materials. Feel free to explore the piles of logs and branches, as many dogs enjoy sniffing around them. Please use extra care, as these areas may contain uneven footing or other natural hazards. Please make sure your dog is up to date on flea and tick prevention before visiting, as the property includes heavily wooded areas. By booking, guests agree that they are responsible for their own safety, their dogs’ safety, their dogs’ behavior, and any damage caused by their dogs during the visit.

I live and work on this 5-acre property in south Maplewood, which has been in my family for almost 4 decades. The land is still underdeveloped, wooded, and peaceful -- a small nature oasis tucked into the suburbs. In the summertime, the property is surrounded by lush trees, and you really do not see any neighbors. Dogs are a big part of my daily life. I own four; two are with me - a patterdale terrier and a pitmix rehomed from a friend. I also board dogs through Rover, so the property has plenty of dog smells and familiar dog-park energy, along with all the natural scents that come from woods, grass, trees, and wildlife. We regularly see deer, rabbits, possums, moles, raccoons, many bird species, and other critters. A group of about 10 deer recently walked right past my bedroom. I do seasonal tree work, so you will see logs, branches, sticks, wood, and natural materials around parts of the property. Many dogs love this because there are so many hidden smells and textures to explore. I worked in nonprofit fundraising for 30 years before transitioning to working on my land.
