Location

Description

I’m lucky enough to have a private backyard in Somerville, where extra space is a rare commodity. Fenced, with some ground area and some brick-paved. Play with your dog or relax on the deck furniture (swinging rope chair, hammock, table and chairs) while your furbaby explores, sniffs, and enjoys their freedom. Plenty of street parking; visitors pass available to borrow.

This spot was exactly as described, but unfortunately my pup is still quite young so she couldn’t appreciate it fully. There were a lot of leaves, twigs, and moss that she was eating, and the proximity to the commuter rail and the wind chimes spooked her a little. All things that are not the fault of the host, just worth noting if your pup is sound sensitive. Great little spot tucked away in Somerville otherwise!

Good spot for a dog to spend energy sniffing around, and running a little bit. Ours got home exhausted. =) We had a great time and plan on bringing our dog here at least once a week!

Nice backyard for your puppy. Hopefully we will be back sometime soon!

My 1 y o rescue Douglas loves to visit Cheryl’s Little Urban Oasis. He can sniff around off-leash and (consensually) wrestle with a playmate. Don’t let the size of the Oasis fool you— even though Douglas is 55+ lbs, he can get a lot of exercise this space. Thanks, Cheryl!

Host replied: Thanks, Deborah! I’m glad Douglas and his playmate had a great time!

Pros: the place was easy to find and easy to access. There was a little note on the fence that "sniff spot", making us confident we were in the right place. There was a porch with seats for the humans. Cons: one side of the yard is fenced with trees and chicken wire. The chicken wire has some holes near the bottom, and one of our dogs escaped into the neighbor's yard. We moved around items in the yard to plug the holes, but it definitely made for a scary few minutes when the dog was loose! Also, the yard has no grass. The ground is entirely dirt, so our pups were in desperate need of a bath by the end!

Host replied: Oh, I’m so glad your dog didn’t go too far and I’m sorry you had a scary few minutes. Thanks for pointing out the hole in the chicken wire and I’ll be sure to take care of that right away!

The spot is as is right behind the driveway and the door says sniffspot. There is a patio on top with chairs to sit on and quite a few treats available. The area is high fenced on two side and the third side is wire fenced (As you can see in the pics). It is definitely a little oasis of sorts for small dogs to run around a bit and medium size dogs to jump around. It is also quite close to the train tracks so you can hear sometimes as they go by. My dogs had a nice time sniffing around and just jumping up and down the patio and the garden area.

The spot was as shown in the pictures! The entrance is through the driveway on the right on the house and had a small sign on it that said sniffspot!

    Good spot

Meet your host

Hi! I’ve had dogs all my life, and have lived in the Somerville area for 20 years. Two of my late rescue dogs were very reactive to other dogs and sometimes people, so I couldn’t take them to parks. It was wonderful to have even a small spot for them to be off-leash and sniff and play. I’m hoping to provide such a little spot for others through Sniffspot!
