Welcome to Maplewood Farm Dog Retreat -- a peaceful 5-acre nature escape in south Maplewood near Battle Creek, just minutes from I-94 & McKnight. This is still undeveloped farmland, roughly the size of a city block, tucked into the suburbs, with rolling hills, mature trees, wooded trails, open field space, wildlife scents (ton of bunnies!), and a very different feel from a typical backyard spot. Dogs get room to run, sniff, explore, and decompress away from crowded dog parks, while hoomans can relax in the shade or bring family for a picnic. For history buffs, the property also has the only standing barn in Maplewood, built in 1896 and still in use. QUICK 30-MIN VISITS are great for pups who just need to burn energy, stretch their legs, or take a potty break. The main fenced play area is approx. 60 x 100 ft, with room for off-leash play, fetch, zoomies, a 7-ft spring pole, and the NEW Pup Parkour Platform for climbing, balancing, confidence-building, and play. Lots of balls, frisbees, tug ropes, and poop bags available. Water play includes a popular splash pad, bathing sprayer with doggie shampoo, and a fancy lawn sprinkler with settings for pups who love “eating water” lol! Parking is right next to the gate, with shaded seating and a hammock for the hoomans too -- sometimes suspiciously comfortable. Please remember, you did bring a dog ;) For 30-min visits, please use the fenced area only. The spot is largely SELF-SERVE. Water play should be on and ready when you arrive; please turn ALL water off when it’s not being used and before you leave, since I may not always be home to monitor it. I may or may not come out to say hi depending on my work schedule, so don’t wait for me -- just come in and enjoy your visit. I keep app notifications on and am good about responding, so message me anytime if you have a question or need something. For the FULL MAPLEWOOD FARM EXPERIENCE, I recommend booking 1–2 hours. Explore the fenced area, then head through the back gate for a slower long-leash walk through the wooded trails, around the barn and house, and toward the open field. There are also a couple trolley lines for semi-free roaming; the longer one runs over a road trail. Trolley attachments may be at either end of the line, so check both ends if you don’t see one right away. Signs and a property map in the photos help guide you, but feel free to explore and take whatever route suits you. My pups stay inside during reservations. Occasionally, I may be working in a designated area between the house and barn, mostly out of sight. Any active work area will be coned off -- just give it a little space. This is a natural, dog-friendly space with a manicured feel -- part private dog park, part little nature retreat. Dogs are welcome to explore, climb on logs and wood-chip piles, sniff around, chew or pull on branches, and dig -- even inside the fenced area. I’m not precious about the landscape here, esp since the property may be developed next year. While it’s still here, I want our furry friends to have it and enjoy it. Foster dogs and dogs with physical or sensory challenges are welcome for a steep discount. The spot is open pretty much anytime from early morning to midnight, so you can book around your dog’s energy, the weather, or your own schedule. LED night lights make evening visits easy, and nighttime can be much cooler for pups on hot days. Bug spray available. Supervised campfire use available -- privately message me. As a dog lover and builder, I pay attention to how pups actually use the space and keep adding small improvements and enrichment features as I go. The newest addition is the Pup Parkour Platform -- strongly built from logs and sawn lumber, with ramps, balance beams, climbing surfaces, and colorful stepping stumps for pups of different sizes and confidence levels. Highwood Ave is set back from most play areas, but dogs may still notice traffic, dog walkers, or nearby neighborhood dogs. Wildlife scents are common here, including deer, rabbits, squirrels, birds, and other animals. Please keep an eye on dogs with high prey drive. For longer visits using the trolley zipline system, clip your dog directly to the trolley line using a secure harness or collar attachment point, not a leash. Leashes can wrap around dogs more easily. The line is rated up to 1,125 lbs, but please use good judgment with strong or determined dogs. Trails and fields may have burrs/stick-tights, wood nettle, uneven ground, and other natural farm/wooded-area hazards.

For nervous, skittish, reactive, or slow-to-warm-up dogs, I can spend time with you during the visit to help your dog get comfortable with the space. This may include calm observation, a slow property introduction, confidence-building, and helping your dog settle without pressure. Not formal training. Please reserve at least 2 days ahead of time.

Dogs may be off-leash inside the main fenced play area. Please make sure all gates are closed and latched before releasing your pup, and close/latch them behind you. Outside the fenced area, please use a leash or long line. Keep an eye on your pup throughout your visit and clean up before leaving. Courtesy poop bags are available. Flea/tick prevention is strongly recommended due to the wooded setting and wildlife. By booking, guests agree to be responsible for themselves, their dogs, their dogs’ behavior, and any accidents during the visit.

Dogs are a big part of my daily life, and I also board dogs, so the property is full of natural scents, wildlife, and familiar dog smells. I’m a builder, woodworker, carpenter, and arborist, so you’ll see logs, branches, wood chips, and other natural materials that dogs love to sniff, climb, and explore. Before this chapter, I spent about 30 years in nonprofit fundraising and leadership.

Great open space for all dogs and humans. We have a full acre fenced and then have a whole front/side yard partially fenced, with gate access from the 1 acre. We have 4-5 feet of woods the dogs can roam through. We are currently working on making a trail through the woods so you can go on the adventure with your pup. There is a kiddy pool, with towels to dry off, a dogo splash pad. There are 3 water drinking bowls throughout the yard for the dogs. We have some toys for kids and dogs. We have doggie first aid if needed. We have chairs out for the humans so plenty of seating. We have Umbrellas as well if need for sun or shade. Hose is always accessible to guest. Unfortunately right now M-F 6-3pm there is construction happening behind the property, out of owners control sorry.
