Location

Description

We are located in the Roosevelt neighborhood of Bellingham. Our "back 40" is a mostly maintained lawn with several trees for shade and a covered back porch for resting. Two sides of the "back forty" are bordered with a 6 foot cedar privacy fence. The far back of the yard borders a city watershed with a 6 foot chain link fence. Deer can often be spotted on the watershed but will leave the area once you and your fur baby arrive. Please consider posting a picture of you and your dog playing on our back forty. :)

Cleanliness

100% of guests said this spot was as clean as expected during their visit.

Hazards

There are often bees during the summer. There are occasional potholes, some emerging plant starts and some decaying tree trunks. The grass surface can be uneven. Heading into winter, I put down straw but there can be muddy patches. There are various mushrooms (depending on the time of year), a rhododendron plant, a cedar tree and a plum tree. There is about 20 feet of gravel that users must be able to navigate to enter my yard.

Additional rules

Mid-March I'll be closing my calendar until about mid-April. I'm hoping to grow grass in some of those mud spots created this winter. I walk the property every day looking for poop. Please clean up after your pet so we can all enjoy a poop free play area. Toys are washed about every two weeks. I'd love to meet you but also want to respect your privacy. Feel free to knock on my slider if you have a question or would just like to say hi. Please don’t park across the street. They need every square inch of parking they can get. Have fun!!!

Jill’s backyard is exactly as pictured. It is HUGE! The yard was nice and flat and the toys provided were in great condition. We will be back for sure!

Stella loves this special spot to play fetch. She is only 11 months old and runs and runs! Thank you.

Always a pleasure to visit the “Back Forty”… Perfect place for exercising Lucy…Both extraordinarily clean, and large enough to run full on off lead…

    Great spot!

Large well maintained yard with mix of sun and shade. Quiet neighborhood and with nature setting. Appreciate the various places to sit and the organized set up with water, toys, etc.

This is a great yard and we had a blast! My dog is a notorious fence jumper and the fences were high and secure, so there were no concerns. Water provided, and a selection of toys that my dog loved. Thank you, we will definitely be back!

“Lucy” had a fantastic time!!! This experience was everything we had hoped for and more… However, I am afraid to write too glowing a report, for fear that we will be unable to book a convenient time in the future…. Unfortunately, we didn’t take any pictures (I forgot)…We were too engrossed in watching our puppy running ‘free’ (off-lead) for the first time. In summary, cannot wait to return.

Host replied: Little Lucy is a beautiful little girl and I’m so glad you had a good time. Come back soon.

    Amazing yard and host.

Meet your host

I recently moved to Bellingham to be near family. My sidekick "Lil" loves to explore our fenced "back 40" and keep track of the squirrels.

DEEP SNOW HERE! AT LEAST A FOOT OUT BY THE GATE. WOULD SUGGEST WAIT UNTIL WE GET SOME WARMER WEATHER AND RAIN. WEATHER ALERT: If you are checking the weather online check the Ferndale (98248) weather. The Bellingham weather stops at the Smith Road. My prevailing wind is from the South BUT I do get the cold NE wind from Canada. NOTE: I have a new young dog who is still learning about socialization and is a bit on the vocal side. I apologize if this is a problem for your dogs. I will try to keep her under control. This is an acreage area which formerly held dog events; barn hunt, earth dog, carting, rally, obedience, tracking and nose work. The off leash area was set up for the dogs to have a place to run and play safely away from the other dogs when not working. This is all sandy loam so no standing water even when it rains. There is a water faucet down by the smaller barn (west side). You are welcome to fill your dogs bowls. Just be sure you turn the water off after. I have put some folding chairs just inside the big door of the barn. You are welcome to use them. I have also put a shovel out there so you can fill in any holes your dog digs. It is important you put balls back in the crate, they do not do well under the mower (the mower doesn't like it either. Please fill in any large holes your dog digs, so my mower doesn't bog down in one. The garden is done for this year so if you want a bit more room to run your dogs, you may close the 2 big gates and let your dog run in the "parking area". It is all fully fenced. Be aware, the big gate into the back pasture does have a gap under it. THE BACK PASTURE IS OFF LIMITS THERE IS LIVESTOCK BACK THERE! PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG EVEN IN THE BIG AREA. THANK YOU!!!

Natural wonderland for exploration!

The fencing is very secure here. This spot is over 1+ acres. The middle area is mostly wooded with some semblance of a trail throughout, though its mostly just left in its natural state so you may have to step over some fallen logs while wandering about. It is long and narrow shaped. Each end has a grassy more open area. The whole area stays reletively dry year round due to the tree cover. Not a ton of open grass space for far throwing fetch, but lots of space for dogs to run and explore in a narutal feeling setting, and fetch could be played in the grassy area closest to where you enter as there is a 50+ throwing distance or so there. All of our fencing is 5+ feet tall, just installed this last year so very sturdy. It runs pretty close to the ground so even small dogs should be safe. There is a double wide gate to enter. Please try to do your best to pick up after your own dogs waste. None of our own animals use this space to it remains nice for all who visit. There is no water access here so also please bring your own water and dish for your dog to stay hydrated while they play. There are not usually other dogs visible from this space. A neighbor a few houses down has 2 dogs that are sometimes out but can only be seen through the trees in one 10' linear span of fence along my space. If anyone is walking a dog along the road, they would be visible through the trees from that side of fencing, but again from a distance, and rarely a dog may be out in another fenced area of my property as a couple of my renters who also live here have dogs in other fenced yards so when they are home they may be out. But they dont share a direct fenceline so would never be nose to nose with your dogs. And I will always have my dogs inside if you have booked a day in advance, and will try my best to have them inside if im able during a same day reservation. If you are worried about other dogs because yours are reactive to possibly seeing other dogs nearby and its a same day reservation, please message me ahead of time so I can either make sure there wont be any other dogs around at that time on my property for sure, or let you know a time when that could be the case if its not possible during the time you reserved origionally. Thanks!
