55So nice to have a place close to Missoula where my sometimes reactive dog can run off leash and we don’t have to worry about running into people. We spent an hour and walked out and back and saw only a small part of the property. Looking forward to doing a longer visit next time. Pretty views and easy walking on a flat dirt road. Kelsey D.

55We had a great time romping around the fields and playing fetch. Very open and pretty. Also liked that the bathroom was open this time of year. We even saw a few eagles. We will definitely be back! Ellie W.

55It was a little hard to find with no clear signs pointing to the campground after the initial turn but we made it!! I would not recommend in the winter if you don’t have 4WD as the campground road was not plowed by our 11:30am appointment. There wasn’t any heads up about this and we had to drive up some hills in quite a bit of snow. My 4wd suv made it up no problem. The property itself was wonderful and having the entire place to ourself was a relief for my dogs! Lots of spots to roam and run! I would also note that your dog isn’t complete secure in the property so good recall or a leashed walk is important! Overall super pleased with the spot and privacy and will definitely be back! 55Google maps made it a little difficult to find. The turn (off Moccasin) is just a road north of Gowan(where Google maps thinks you should turn)
Once we found the place, It was nice to meander through the fields and take in the views and not worry about our dogs being off leash. They had a frolicking good time! Will do again!Athena C.

55Another good time at Alton’s farm! Wanted to take the dog to burn off some energy after work but because it was getting dark I was hesitant on where to take him. So glad I could take him here and play in an area I felt safe in. Courtney B.

55I wasn’t expecting to visit Alton’s farm twice in one weekend, but it snowed and I couldn’t resist letting my dog romp in the snow in a location I could trust!
I was a little apprehensive about getting to the sniffspot with fresh snow covering the bumpy trail, but we made it! As long as you are cautious and experienced in off-roading in your vehicle, that little stretch off the dirt road to the sniffspot shouldn’t be an issue.Courtney B.

55This was a great way to get our doggos out and let them run! They loved it so much. There is a two track road to walk. The dogs can get through the fence, but it’s enough of a barrier to keep them disinterested. We will definitely be back. Sarah B.

55It was hard to navigate getting to the sniffspot, but now that I’m familiar with it I will definitely be back! Alton provides really clear instructions, which is super helpful because Google/Apple maps will be incorrect, but if you are not entirely familiar with the area it can be a little nervewracking and confusing to get to the spot—we were 15 minutes late because I kept getting lost! 😅 Good news: just as we were about to give up and head back the way we came, we found the hipcamp sign! We came from Mullan Rd so the hipcamp sign is not clearly visible from that side of the road but we caught it on the way back!
The sniffspot itself is LOVELY! What a nice hidden gem. It was a lot of fun to explore a small part of the area and we will definitely be back to explore the rest of it! Griffyn has a good time running through tall grass and checking the area out and it was nice to let him roam without worrying about running into anyone. We did spot a few deer roaming around, so if your dog has a high prey drive be wary of that! Griffyn has decent recall so I was not worried about him chasing anything or trying to slip through the wire fencing, but if that is a concern for you I would highly recommend bringing a longline or drag line along as a backup!
The hipcamp area is neat too, we checked out the cute little A-frame on site and may need to come camp for a night in the summer! We will definitely be regulars at the sniffspot though!Courtney B.

55Love it! We have a pretty reactive rescue with us and this place was awesome! Contacted owner to make sure nobody else would be near by and there wasn’t. My dog was able to run freely! Which he loved! Doesn’t get to run free very often. Will definitely be back! We liked that there was a bathroom and water available by the entrance.!Mateo L.

55My dog and I had a blast at Alton’s farm. There are birds and rodents and deer to smell and chase, water to swim in, and endless acreage to roam. The views are stunning and make for a great long walk for people, too. We had no problem finding the farm with Alton’s directions, and the cattle fencing was sufficient to keep my dog contained. We plan to become regular visitors.
For owners of dogs with long hair: when we visited, the burs were plentiful and required lots of grooming when we got home (worth it). For owners with reactive dogs: when we parked (accessing the spot from Millan rd) there was a dog near the house that appeared to be off-leash. It did not chase after us or leave the yard, so don’t be concerned if it’s there upon your arrival.Courtney C.

55Incredible spot! We are staying at the Hipcamp on the property and we rented the field next to the camp area and it was amazing. Private and beautiful! Highly recommend. You park in the campground area and walk into their field so you could possibly walk by some leashed dogs in their sites. Once you get in the field you can’t even see them anymore. Loved it! Tasha C.

55Beautiful property with so many different trails, views, and sniffs to explore! Our doggo had an absolute blast; truly a great space to let your dog just be a dog and run free, be curious, and explore. Alton was a great host; he suggested using a particular entrance based on what we were interested in experiencing, and he met us there to give us some advice on which directions to head in, features to look for, etc. Highly recommend a visit!Anna S.

Will I encounter other dogs at Frenchtown dog hiking trails?
Not a chance. Frenchtown dog hiking trails operate on a strict one-booking-at-a-time system, so the space is entirely yours during your reserved slot. Host dogs are kept away, and there's a mandatory 30-minute buffer between bookings—meaning you won't cross paths with the previous or next guest. For Frenchtown owners with reactive dogs, puppies, or any dog needing privacy, this makes all the difference in providing safe, stress-free exercise.
Are Frenchtown dog hiking trails safe for fearful or anxious dogs?
Yes! Frenchtown dog hiking trails provide controlled, predictable environments without the chaos of public dog parks. Since bookings are completely private with 30-minute buffers, anxious dogs can explore a natural outdoor path where dogs can explore varied terrain off-leash in a safe, private environment without overwhelming encounters. Many Frenchtown dog owners specifically choose dog hiking trails for fearful dogs who need gentle, stress-free exercise environments.
Can puppies use Frenchtown dog hiking trails?
Absolutely! Frenchtown dog hiking trails are excellent for puppy socialization because they're private and controlled. Puppies can explore a natural outdoor path where dogs can explore varied terrain off-leash in a safe, private environment, practice recall, and build confidence without the overwhelming chaos that can create fear or reactivity in young dogs. Just ensure your puppy has age-appropriate vaccinations before visiting.
How do I choose the best dog hiking trail in Frenchtown?
Start by filtering Frenchtown's 3 dog hiking trails for your specific needs: secure fencing for escape artists, "fewer dogs seen/heard" for reactive dogs, flat terrain for seniors, appropriate sizing for small dogs, or specific amenities for training. Look for "Top Spots" like Frenchtown's Expansive Private Seclusion, a Dog's Dream with excellent reviews.Read feedback from other Frenchtown owners with similar dog types to find your perfect match.
What are Frenchtown's dog hiking trail requirements?
All dogs must have basic vaccinations or titers. Each Frenchtown host may have additional rules on their listing. Most dog hiking trails welcome all breeds, sizes, and temperament levels, including reactive dogs who can't safely visit public dog parks. Adult supervision is required at all times.
