55HAPPY ONE YEAR TO WOOF AND I!! We have been coming out since Shila opened! It’s that time of the year folks. Put on your overalls and boots and explore. It’s time to step off the man made path and follow the deer trails (or forge your own way) through the woods! Hangout on the trail while your dog ventures through the brush! This property has so much to offer for your dog; woods, brush, trails, bluffs and the river. Plenty of obstacles for your pup to jump, climb or crawl. This place is truly for the dogs. I can say I enjoy it just as much as woof and Luna when we are all down there together. Woof has 100% freedom to explore, do his own thing and truly follow his wild heart and sniffer! We love being here. I don’t get to see woof rest much in the woods but the last 30 mins we sat on the river and watched the world go by. The vet tech in me wants to let future visitors know that ticks are still alive and biting. I found a few crawling on me and the doggos. Enjoy yourself here and enjoy watching your dog be a dog. 55This trail is so pretty. Lily loved it. It’s a true hike so if your not ok with rocky hill maybe choice something easier. Bring hiking boots that have ankle support and maybe a towel if your dog likes to walk in water. I loved it and will be coming again and booking longer than an hour for sure. The host are so kind and responsive via messenger. Anjelica W.

55Shila was a fantastic host and has a beautiful property! We are lucky to be able to visit and let the pups roam freely knowing there aren’t other people around. The river was the highlight for my pups and once we hiked down the trail and got to the flatland near the river, we never ventured any further on the trail (I was a little nervous to follow a path any direction as there were multiple off-trails connected to the main and I had a fear of getting lost) but also my pups didn’t want to get out of the water :) easy to find and access the spot and clearly marked up front but once you get to the river, it can be a little confusing for inexperienced hikers like myself with the different paths. We just went straight down the hill and enjoyed the perfect level of water. So peaceful and a great time. I’ve been to a few spots and this one by far has been my favorite. Thank you so much for sharing your space my pups are knocked after 2 hours of play!! :) Delaney L.

55This Sniffspot was great! They own such a lovely swatch of land and are so generous to share it with us. Great communication from the host. Their description made it easy to find. It was quiet except for the sounds of the woods and the river. The water was perfect depth for wading, which was great for my pup who’s a bit ambivalent about getting her whole self wet. (Dogs who like to swim could definitely do that, too!) Worth the hour drive from STL. We will definitely be back.
If you plan to let your pup offleash, I’d definitely recommend they have a strong recall, as the underbrush makes it hard to see where they’ve gone! We had a good time practicing our offleash recall in a challenging environment (so many interesting critter smells!), though I did put her on her long leash for a while after she wasn’t coming back to me fast enough for my comfort 😅 Margaret P.

55This was by far THE best SniffSpot we have been to. Our dogs stay fairly close, but we truly didn't have to worry about them (helicopter mom 🚁). They could go any direction and there was nothing in sight but trees and land. Well worth the drive from St. Louis. The driveway is hidden. On Google Maps, their house is set back from the driveway. Coming from Highway 30, as soon as you PASS the 📍, it's the very next driveway. You aren't passing the property. It is a small, sharp turn to get into the driveway, going back toward the direction you are initially coming from. Going down the driveway, you will see the adorable little hut to the right. We parked next to the opening next to it facing out. The trail to go down is directly across from it, with a metal chair and an arrow pointing down that way. The trail leading down is steep and rocky, so be careful. It's a workout going back up, but doable. If you have dogs like mine, I would keep them on a leash until you're at least halfway down the trail where it smooths out. Once you get down there, everything opens up and you'll eventually get down to the river. It was amazing! We have 2 Staffy/Pitbull mixes, and they were able to walk about halfway across before they even had to swim. The current wasn't bad at all, which is what worried me. It was the first time swimming for one of my dogs in over 2 years, since she was a puppy, and she did just fine! We were skipping rocks into the water and they were chasing them. It was a blast! This is the first time we've extended our stay, and we would have even longer if we had the time. Not to mention they had my dream house! The host, Shila, was sweet and very attentive, answering my questions all the way through (sorry). She left our dogs treats and water, and bug spray for us at the hut with a little note. We didn't get a single.bug bite, no ticks on the dogs, nothing. We were shocked. I don't think we saw another animal, including squirrels, the whole time we were there. Wish we had come at the beginning of summer. As for the 1 one-star review that I read, the picture screams "Karen" and he has 2 Standard Poodles. Not surprised. 🙄 There were spiderwebs as expected in a place like this, but no sticks other than on the ground. I would LOVE to have a property like this. Too bad you can't post videos. Thanks for being a great host!Stacey T.

55This was super cute! Our dog loved it. It does take about 15-20 minutes to get to the river if you have a slow dog like mine, and the path is fairly rocky. It was not difficult though, just took some time.

55Amazing spot! My poodle LOVES water and there’s not a ton of private water spots for us to go to where she can be off leash in the city. This was a great adventure. There was complimentary bug spray which was very helpful, and signage to find the trailhead easily. My recommendation is to go on a day where it isn’t deathly hot; It was intense heading back to the car from the waterfront, since the path is mostly uphill. By the water it is peaceful and quiet, and the river itself is pretty shallow and the current was mild so I felt comfortable letting my dog swim. Overall we will absolutely be back (just maybe on a day where it isn’t 90 degrees 😂). Sebastian D.

55This was an amazing spot for me and Louie! The river was down enough for us to splash around and cool off on a hot day. The walk down and back from the river access is about 10ish minutes each way so booking for 2 hours was the perfect amount of time. We had a sign welcoming us to the property and a water bowl with Louie’s name on it ❤️ thank you so much for having us!Ally D.

55This is the best sniff spot place we have ever visited and this is our third time here. There were three different groups there including us and they prepare three different bowls respectively with puppies’ names on them. They even prepared a cooler with ices and bottle water for human handlers. Wish I could give them 10 stars. This is a keeper! Zhini Z.

55It’s been too long since I’ve been down, as soon as I got there it felt good to be back! They cut out some trails which were really nice! The trails are more for us two leggers I think because woof never spent any time on them 😂 but he truly loves to explore and that’s one of the biggest reasons I love going is to watch him! We borrowed their dog Luna to come with us and she’s such an angel of a girl 💗 we were there late in the evening so the walk up was full of fireflies! Thank you Shila for always being so good to Woof and I! You and your family are one of the reasons we love coming there! Kaitlyn L.

Frequently asked questions about Dittmer dog hiking trails
Why are private dog hiking trails better than public dog parks in Dittmer?
Private dog hiking trails in Dittmer eliminate major public park risks: unpredictable dog encounters that scare puppies, aggressive dogs that trigger reactive behavior, chaotic crowds that overwhelm seniors or small dogs, and disease transmission from dozens of unknown dogs. Dittmer's 9 private dog hiking trails offer complete privacy, professionally maintained cleanliness, and controlled environments. Whether you have a fearful puppy, a reactive adult, a fragile senior, or simply want peace of mind, private bookings give you control.
How safe are Dittmer dog hiking trails compared to public dog parks?
Dittmer dog hiking trails are significantly safer than public facilities. Public dog parks risk: aggressive dogs, inattentive owners, disease transmission, overcrowding that triggers reactive behaviors or injuries. Private Dittmer dog hiking trails eliminate these concerns—bookings are completely private, all guests have vaccinated dogs (or titers), and hosts maintain clean spaces. 93% of Sniffspot reviews are 5 stars.
Are Dittmer dog hiking trails safe for reactive dogs?
Dittmer owners of reactive dogs choose dog hiking trails because they offer safe, private environments for off-leash exercise without the triggers of public dog parks. Complete privacy means no unexpected dog encounters, no overwhelming chaos, no aggressive dogs. Reactive dogs can finally enjoy natural exploration and varied terrain while building confidence in a controlled setting. Many Dittmer reactive dog owners say Sniffspot is their only safe exercise option.
Can anxious dogs safely use Dittmer dog hiking trails?
Yes! Dittmer dog hiking trails provide controlled environments perfect for anxious or fearful dogs. No other dogs means no triggers, no overwhelming situations. Anxious dogs can explore a natural outdoor path where dogs can explore varied terrain off-leash in a safe, private environment at their own pace without stress. Many Dittmer dog hiking trails offer quiet, spacious settings ideal for building confidence in nervous dogs who struggle at chaotic public dog parks.
Are Dittmer dog hiking trails good for small dogs?
Absolutely! Small dogs benefit enormously from Dittmer dog hiking trails because they can explore without fear of being trampled or intimidated by larger breeds. Many small dog owners in Dittmer avoid public parks entirely due to safety concerns—dog hiking trails eliminate that worry. Filter for appropriate sizing, secure fencing with no gaps, and hosts who understand petite pup needs.
Do Dittmer dog hiking trails work for senior dogs?
Yes! Senior dogs thrive at Dittmer dog hiking trails because they can move at their own pace without being knocked over by rambunctious puppies or young dogs. Look for Dittmer dog hiking trails with flat terrain, easy access, shade, and smaller sizes if your senior has mobility limitations. The privacy means your older dog can rest when needed and enjoy gentle exercise without stress.
What do Dittmer dog owners say about dog hiking trails?
Reviews of Dittmer dog hiking trails consistently highlight: excellent privacy for all dog types, secure fencing that prevented escapes, clean and well-maintained spaces, responsive hosts, and safe environments for anxious, fearful, reactive, senior, and small dogs. Local favorite The Woodland Bluffs: 30 acres forest off Big River is particularly praised in Dittmer. Read reviews to see real experiences from Dittmer dog owners with similar needs.
How clean and maintained are Dittmer dog hiking trails?
Dittmer hosts maintain their own dog hiking trails and take pride in providing excellent experiences. All guests must have vaccinated dogs (or titers). Many Dittmer hosts provide poop bags, trash cans, and regular cleaning. Reviews highlight maintenance quality—browse Dittmer dog hiking trail listings to see real feedback about cleanliness and upkeep.
