Laila's Legacy Animal Rescue

#15 in United States, #1 in District of Columbia, #1 in Washington

Laila's Legacy was founded with a mission to ensure dogs impacted by breed bias and behavioral or physical challenges have a chance at a better life. Laila, our name sake, was an incredible dog who had a behavioral challenge that caused aggression towards dogs. Laila loved her humans, and especially our Co-Founder, Ashe. She was a large bully breed so her size combined with local breed bias meant sometimes people were afraid of her. But that didn't stop her from winning people over with her goofy energy. The rescue she was with did not have the resources to support Laila and couldn't find a suitable partner to take on her care because of her size and breed. As a result she was euthanized. Laila's Legacy was founded to save dogs like Laila. We never want a dog to be euthanized because an owner, a volunteer, or an organization didn't have the resources or because breed bias stopped them from getting the help they deserved. Dogs like Laila deserve a chance at life and that's what we're here to do!

We are the only breed specific doberman rescue in the state and our work is never done! It is SHDR's personal mission to assist these magnificent breeds in any way we can. We are dedicated to educating the public as well as future Doberman owners about these majestic, often misunderstood breeds. They are often portrayed as aggressive dogs who will attack at a moment's notice when in fact they are Velcro dogs who are loyal, protective, and want to please their family! A Doberman wants nothing more than to be by your side and on your couch. All SHDR rescues are up to date on their shots, HW tested, microchipped, and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Some come into rescue injured or abused and it may take a little longer to ready them for a forever home.

With a focus on community partnerships, this forward-facing approach works to ensure safe and healthy environments for people and pets. The department promotes responsible pet ownership, implements programs to reduce animal overpopulation, and has formed innovative partnerships and programs to increase the City's effectiveness in supporting animals and humans in Mobile. As part of this approach, a newly modernized Animal Services facility is currently in design and will be built in a new location central to all parts of the City, and many new positions are also being added to further our mission and programs. We are proud to have served domestic animals in Juneau and its outlying communities for 60 years. Although we are also contracted to perform Animal Control and Protection Services by the City and Borough of Juneau, we are not a government entity. We continue to rely heavily on the generous contributions from the public in order to sustain our honored tradition of serving animals in need in our community. It is through these contributions that Juneau Animal Rescue has been able to endure and care for animals in need successfully throughout its many years. Our animal shelter began as a small shed under the bridge over Gastineau Channel. While we will always be proud of those humble beginnings, our new name and logo more accurately convey the community spirit of the organization that has served Juneau’s animal population since 1963. In January 2019 we changed our name to Juneau Animal Rescue, hoping to strengthen awareness of our organization and expand our public outreach. We are continually grateful for the generous support of the community and look forward to the next 50 plus years of service as Juneau Animal Rescue.

We work our tails off to give our pups the medical help, enrichment, socialization, and love that they need on their journeys to finding forever homes.

We adopted our pup in August 2023 from Southwest Oasis Lab Rescue. We have adopted from other rescues in the past and SOLR is by far the most thorough, easy to communicate with and helpful. After adoption, if we had a question, they were always there with an answer or suggestion. The volunteers truly care about finding the right home for the dogs. Last Chance AR believes in advocating for the abused, abandoned, and neglected animals across the state that cannot speak for themselves. Working in conjunction with various clinics, Last Chance AR travels statewide to urban and rural communities to provide comfort, safety, and love to animals in need. Hundreds of lives have been saved through our efforts, which include a spay and neuter program for impoverished pet owners, frequent visits to rescue animals from shelters suffering from a desperate lack of funding, and the complete inability for any of our patient and dedicated volunteers to turn down a creature in need. We serve as a resource to our community and local pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training and good nutrition. We work with committed volunteers, veterinarians, fosters, and trainers to provide health care and temporary homes to animals deserving of another chance. Our number one priority is ensuring the health of all of our dogs and carefully screening and well matching ‚furever homes.

I adopted my Koda from the Idaho Humane Society in October 2023. He had the sweetest face and was listed as a "TLC" adoption which meant some extra screening steps. It started with a phone call to make sure I understood his personality and needs and to see if that would fit with my lifestyle and expectations. Then we scheduled a meet & greet for me and also for my current dog. I met Koda (previously Luca) and 2 staff members coached me through how to interact with him and let him decide if I was his human. Then we went and got my lab, Chauncey, to see if they could be friends. The whole process was over an hour. I loved how dedicated they were to finding the RIGHT home for him. They also gave me a lot of tips on how to make him feel safe and comfortable, how to let him lead interactions and how to read his body language. He has been such a wonderful addition to our home! I also love that they routinely transfer dogs in from other areas to help with medical care and improving their chances of adoption. Koda was found as a stray in a rural part of the state and haf some medical issues. They brought him in, fixed him up, and got him ready for his forever family.

CCR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 2001 to help find permanent, loving homes for homeless dogs in our city. CCR has saved the lives of over 8,000 dogs while also finding their forever homes! Traditionally, these animals were automatically euthanized at area shelters. However, today, Chicago Canine Rescue exists to give many of these animals a second chance, too! CCR assists the animals that are the MOST vulnerable in our city ‚the dogs that are slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, too injured, have disabilities, or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters at other shelters. We are committed to each dog who comes into our care and won't stop providing for them we find their perfect family! Though we are just one of many rescues in Chicago, our dogs are one in a million and we are committed to leaving no dog behind!

Dogs Forever is one heck of a sanctuary for the dogs that come into care here. I've been volunteering for a little over a year as a Dog Walker/Shelter Guardian. Even when the shelter is full, the dogs get three walks a day, lots of play time, and one on one time cuddles when countless volunteers. What I love best about this local shelter is there is always a place here for the "more difficult" dogs. No dog is kicked out or euthanized. If Dogs Forever can't find them a suitable home, then a home is made for them here. (The two sanctuary dogs currently at DF actually have their own little couches, and boy, let me tell you, they have seriously comfy beds and blankets. Ask me how I know. ) All in all, I love the volunteers and owners, the care and extra effort they put into this place, makes it a fantastic place for homeless doggos.

A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue is an amazing supporter of the true underdogs! They have recently accepted a loving dog into their APL Family that has a spinal cord injury. His name is Tango. A dozen other rescues were contacted and each and every one of them declined to accept Tango into their rescue. APL found a way to give Tango a chance to walk again! They located an experience medical foster home to care for Tango. They are finding multiple ways to financially support Tango's medical needs. They are arranging for the key first step in getting Tango an MRI to help set the path for his next medical steps, including physical therapy and rehabilitation. This is the true meaning of rescue! Without A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue, Tango's future looked uncertain and bleak. APL brought hope and determination that Tango will again walk!

The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passionate love for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Tier Haven Rescue, Inc was originally incorporated in 1996 under the name ARK Project, Inc and is a long standing member of the animal rescue community in Kentucky. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has a long journey towards building our animal welfare laws. Even as breed specific legislation has dwindled there are still large numbers of working dogs finding themselves at risk of euthanasia due to a lack of breed knowledge and/or training. Tier Haven is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life.

Adopting from Rescue Charlie's Friends wasn't just about gaining three amazing dogs; it was about giving them a second chance at a happy life. Seeing them blossom in their forever home, full of love and joy, is the most rewarding experience. If you're looking to add a furry companion to your life, I can't recommend Rescue Charlie's Friends enough. They have a heart of gold and a passion for finding loving homes for dogs in need. You might just walk in looking for one dog, but you might leave with three times the love, just like me!

Rescue Charlie's Friends was established in 2018 because we love dogs and want them to have the best life possible. Many dogs lost their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause, our mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of our dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can't stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. These are Charlie's Friends. These are the dogs that we focus on. We stay in touch with shelters and volunteers in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and elsewhere. We bring the dogs to Maine where Fosters care for them until they are adopted. We rescue as many dogs as we can but we always need more help.

    Key to lions heart rescue

Key to Lion's Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

As the literal ‚'last hope' of the dogs we serve, our southern fosters pull dogs and puppies from partner shelters in Arkansas. While in foster, each dog receives love, care, and medical treatment, then receives a health clearance and transports to New England. After a mandatory 48-hour quarantine stay and an additional health clearance, each dog is picked up and fostered by a northern foster family who serves as a gateway to his/her adoptive home, affectionately known as a FURever home.

From the first time I heard about Dalis and her crew (naughty dogs included) I was amazed. The love and care she puts into each animal and their stories. What an amazing rescue right in my back yard. She takes the time to not only save animals, but she helps answer any questions pet owners have when feeling uncertain. Her heart is always with the animals.

At our rescue, we are not only dedicated to matching our dogs with the perfect home, we are also dedicated to educating our community about the benefits of spaying and neutering as Dalis herself raised the funds to build a surgical room at our rescue where we host low cost spay and neuter clinics for the public. We are not exclusive to one area or county, in fact many people use our services from all over the state of Michigan and even some out of state including Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana. Dalis heart belongs to the misunderstood, the old, and the disabled. She always says that her goal is to rescue, but that her dream is that one day she won't have to.

May 1st of 2023 I lost my Tequila ( a Polydactyl Grey Tabby) who was 2 months shy of 18. Had been blessed with 2.5 extra years with here while she was being treated for Renal Failure. At the end of that week May5th I decided that I wanted to go look at a new kitty. I didn’t have any type in mind other then a Female. I had check a few places and either I had to schedule a meet and greet, or wait till an adoption event to even get to see the kitties. At the time I didn’t even know about A Rejoyceful Animal Rescue until I found them on line. It was late in the afternoon on a Friday , but I thought I’d give them a try. The nicest person named Lisa answered the phone and said they had a couple of kittens at the shelter I could come look at. Well off my sister and I went. We had everything in the car just incase we found a new fur baby, and we went to look. Well the first kitten that caught my eye was this tiny Black Tabby shorthair, who happened to be the only female available. I was able to sit and play with her, my sister too and just had a fantastic meeting. She even had a lazy eye that I thought was so cute. I still wasn’t positive about her, I was still kinda wanting another polydactyl kitty. Well Lisa had told me one had just come in I could look at but was not anywhere ready for adoption. While I was meeting this kitty, the black tabby was playing and I kept looking at her and decided she was the kitten for me. This rescue not only had provided the best socialization for this kitty, but the medical care was awesome. They had done tests that a lot of other rescues don’t typically do. They even had her microchipped. The application process was super easy and fees very reasonable. I was able to bring home my new baby girl that day and now almost a year later she is a great addition to the family. If it wasn’t for A Rejoyceful Rescue , I’d hate to think what could have become of my little Stevie!

Here at ARAR, we see our shelter as a safe transition point for many animals in need. Our goal is to keep animals in our shelter for the least amount of time possible. It is just a place for them to crash before their next step into a foster or adoptive home. Currently, we have about 30 cats and 10 dogs in our shelter. We do our best to make the animal's time here the best it can be. When they are in their kennels we play calming doggie music and they get enrichment actives. As we do not have a fenced in yard area outside, on nice days we schedule SniffSpots for our shelter residents! It is a great way that they can explore a new space and get some energy out.

We just worked with Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue to adopt our beautiful, sweet Olaf. This rescue organization and their representatives were extremely communicative once the application was filed and we were found to be an appropriate home. Olaf had his own Case Manager, Tesha who was so very supportive and responsive to us. She worked with Olaf’s foster to connect with us for her final approval. Once fully approved, she reviewed Olaf medical records and history to ensure that he was as healthy as possible and that vaccinations were up to date before he came to Vermont to become part of our family. Olaf was diagnosed with entropion of both eyes at his last vet visit. Tesha and Olaf’s foster worked immediately to address and Olaf underwent surgical repair before he came to us. I would recommend this rescue organization to anyone who loves this breed. They are amazing and work diligently to provide new homes and happy lives for Berners who most often did not have the best start in life. I wish we lived closer to the Midwest as I would definitely support this rescue organization by being a transporter and a foster.

Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don't normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue. Please keep in mind that most ‚rescue/rehome dogs, are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog's issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy's on the Adopting page. The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Warrior Dog rescue is a non-profit organization based in Savage, MN that is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding adoptive homes for dogs that have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. We are celebrating our 6th year in rescue and have saved over 3,400 dogs to date. When we reflect on that number we think that each one of those dogs had a foster hero that YES to saving them! We think about all the visits to the vet, the training, the full food bowls, walks, belly rubs, and all the healing that was given to each of them through the love and safety we were able to provide. Knowing that we were able to help them heal and be ready to love their forever family is a blessing beyond compare. Our storybook is filled with all the Warrior Dogs who have come into our lives and forever imprinted on our hearts. The Warrior Dog family continues to save these sweet souls because they all deserve to the know the gift of love and safety. There is still work to be done and by the grace and selflessness of our volunteer and foster teams, along with our generous donors we will continue. There are so many pups even as you read this that are alone and sick, abandoned in kill shelters and on roadsides, living a life filled with fear and abuse. We are steadfast in our commitment to continue to make a difference, one dog at a time.

Last August I attended an open house/book reading event at our Winona Humane Society. My intent was to check out the cats needing adoption. As luck would have it we got a tour of the facility as well as an overview of what goes on. I walked past the dog Kennels and remember reading about a pair of Goldendoodles that had been surrendered earlier in the year. Bud the male of the duo had not been adopted. I continued my tour, sat with some cats and then left. 2 days later I felt the need to check on Bud. We had recently lost our Golden Retriever and German shepherd at 12 1/2 & 11 yrs. I Spoke with my husband and contacted Winona Humane society. Visited Bud for aprox 1.5 hrs. He was a bit of a wild child and was such high energy. Staff was open and honest and gave us the back story on Bud, as they did not want to blind side us. My husband was hesitant as we did not have much history to go on. We were offered a chance to foster, giving the Humane society a chance to know how he would react to a new environment. After 24 hours we were in love. The time that the staff at the Winona Humane Society spent training Bud had paid off. He is a well rounded absolutely sweet Standard Golden Doodle. The staff is friendly and the facility is run by a group of wonderful people.

I am thankful to have them in my city, as they work tirelessly and advocate for those animals who cannot themselves.

    Stray Rescue of St. Louis

What sets Stray Rescue of St. Louis apart in the animal welfare community near and far? We seek out and take in those who no other organization will help or would simply euthanize because they are too expensive to heal. We take the abandoned, beaten, bred, fought, injured, terrified, defeated and betrayed. We see beyond their brokenness and are here to pick up the pieces to make these special animals whole again. We see the individual and know that there's no one size fits all treatment plan. The minute they enter our doors, we look in their eyes and promise them ALL the second chance they deserve for health, home, commitment and love. Because these animals come in with a story that would give us all nightmares, it takes them longer to open up, trust and believe in humankind again. But with patience and time always on their unique schedule we see the light shine in their eyes again. Animals have an amazing ability to forgive which never ceases to amaze us.

While I adopted Lynyrd through another rescue in town, Unchained Melodies Dog Rescue is really who helped me become a better and more educated dog mom. As a 1st time dog mom, Lynyrd & I didn't speak the same language and I and took to the internet to find some videos that could help me train but they were not how I wanted to train my pup. I remember coming home from a challenging walk, closing myself in the bathroom, and crying because these videos were all about using aversive training and I didn't want to hurt him. Why would anyone want to hurt an animal especially one that was abandoned and possibly abused? I had fleeting thoughts of rehoming him because I didn't feel that I would be able to train him and I didn't want anything terrible to happen to him because all the "training" I was doing was not helping. Enter Unchained Melodies. They have amazing training classes and are R+/Force & Fear Free. The classes were easy to understand and follow along. What a complete difference it made not just for Lynyrd but for myself as well. I was now equipped with the tools to be able to successfully train my pup! We have taken so many training classes through Unchained Melodies and I just signed us up for the Canine Good Citizen Course through UMDR. They become invested in ensuring that you and your pup are set up for success. Kai Murphy, who is one of SniffSpots top trainers in Missouri, is the trainer at Unchained Melodies Dog Rescue and he is amazing at what he does. As a rescue, I have witnessed the tremendous work that they put in as a rescue org. They dedicate their lives to freeing chained or penned dogs and put in so much work to rehabilitate the pups so they can live inside where they are supposed to. They advocate for the animals in their care by vetting the adoption candidates and ensuring that there is a fit between pup and adopters. They will also help other rural shelters by taking in pups, often pregnant mommas, and finding them good homes. I wish I would clearly articulate all the good that I have seen from this Rescue. I will always support their efforts through donating, attending events in and around town or by taking classes through them. In all of the amazing rescues out there, Unchained Melodies Dog Rescue is at the top of the list. Whether someone wants to adopt their new BFF, attend training classes, take part in one of many special events around Columbia, or simply donate time and/or money to help support a rescue, I would absolutely recommend Unchained Melodies Dog Rescue.

Since forming in 2013, Rescue One has helped saved thousands of animals. Dogs find their way to us for many reasons: some are owner surrenders, some are strays, some dogs are found abandoned, left to fend for themselves in vacant homes, open fields, or on the side of the road, and many are pulled from area kill shelters. Besides giving love and socialization to the animals, all will receive necessary medical care, required vaccinations, and be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

    Humane Society of Western Montana

The Humane Society of Western Montana was incorporated in 1963 as the Missoula Humane Society. At that time, our community had a considerable overpopulation of pets. So much so that thousands came through our doors and difficult decisions were made. Fast forward to the present and there is much to celebrate. Our community embraced spay/neuter programs and as a result, the sheer volume of pets coming through our doors for rehoming dropped from over 8,000 to approximately 1,400. HSWM is grateful for the work of all our volunteers and staff over the years. We wish our work was done. However, in many ways it is just beginning. When we consider pet welfare across the state, there are many areas where spay/neuter has simply been an unavailable and unaffordable service. There are communities where pet populations are at unsustainable levels and dogs and cats go hungry. People and pets in those areas need our help. And, as costs rise, many here in Missoula are now finding they cannot afford care. This is why we offer free vaccine clinics, low cost spay neuter services and travel long distances to provide care to underserved clients and pets. Through our programs, which include a robust foster care system, food pantry, behavior hotline and veterinary care, we serve more animals outside the shelter than within our walls. And we are growing.

    Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter

Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2007 and officially took over the sheltering of the City’s companion animals in 2009. It is a common misconception that Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter (YVAS) is a division of the City of Billings. While we do maintain a contract with the City to care for Billings’ lost/stray animals, we are separate entities. In fact, our City contract accounts for less than one-third of the shelter’s annual income, leaving us to raise the remainder of our budget through other means. YVAS also maintains contracts with the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office and the Laurel Police Department to house and reunite lost dogs. YVAS hopes to one day provide an open-door policy to County cats. We will accept cats from outside Billings city limits on a case-by-case basis, depending on adoptability and availability of space. Over the last decade, YVAS has grown to become the largest shelter in Montana, intaking over 5,000 animals every year. YVAS has also made many changes over the years; ever-evolving to provide the best care for animals and the people of the Billings community. Our current shelter programs include reuniting lost pets with their owners, adoption, foster care, volunteer, outreach & education, low-cost spay & neuter clinics, and our life-saving Working Cat Program. We have recently partnered with the University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program to increase our lifesaving capacity and improve the health and well-being of the animals in the community.

    Dog Town Canine Rescue

Since 2003. Dog Town Rescue has focused on saving dogs from the absolute worst situations. Dogs abandoned by humans, dogs coming from survival situations fending for themselves in the desert, and feral dogs living on the fringes of civilization. Many of the dogs we have saved needed to be caught in a humane trap in order to safely bring them to our shelter. The dogs we rescue are not vaccinated. We have taken in dozens of dying puppies with Parvo. They are not fixed, which is a huge contributor to unwanted and neglected dogs. They are not fed properly, so most are full of tapeworms from eating rabbits and roadkill. Loose dogs get into fights, hit by cars, have untreated injuries with infections. We've rescued dogs with buckshot and/or .22 bullets in them that our vet removed while they were being spayed/neutered. We also serve our local Indigenous communities by providing free of charge dog spay/neuters for Tribal members. Most of our neighboring Colonies and Reservations are located in remote areas, and have little to no animal services. City and County animal control are jurisdictionally limited as to what they can provide, but as a non-governmental organization, Dog Town goes where the need is.

    Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas

Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas (RRLV) was founded in Las Vegas, NV. by Danielle Roth-Lapolla and Jon Lapolla in 2019 and focuses on International Rescue Retrievers (and other breeds). RRLV's goal is to save dogs in terrible situations overseas. RRLV is a 100% volunteer based, non-profit organization. We believe in making a difference one dog at a time and being the voice for the voiceless. Retriever Rescue Las Vegas Dog RescueWe started this Rescue because we are aware of outrageous abuse happening in some overseas countries and cases we saw crushed our hearts. It made us think hard of what we can do to make a difference, even if it's one dog at a time. After volunteering throughout Las Vegas we wanted to not have to say no to non-purebred dogs and we didn't want to base our rescue on votes. We just want to save as many of the loving fury faces as we can and make a difference in the furbabies life furever.

If you ever get the chance to visit Over the Hill Senior Dog Sanctuary you should take it, upon walking in the door you will be greeted by at least 10 very happy dogs. The (mostly) senior dogs are given the chance to experience the "couch dog" life that some dogs never get the chance to. Brianna puts her heart, soul and everything she has into the dogs (and a few cats) in her care. Most of this is done all on her own with a very select few that she trusts to call in for help. There are an estimated 500,000 stray dogs in Puerto Rico, a US Commonwealth about the size of Connecticut. Back in October of 2018 four team members went to the island to see if they could help. Throughout the week, the team saved over 30 dogs. Within the next 8 months, the team visited the island 3 more times and continued to save another 50 Satos and placed them in loving homes. They volunteered at The Spayathon for Puerto Rico, doing everything they could to make a difference, but it still was not enough. This is when Save the Satos was formed. We have made it our life's mission to not stop until we make a difference in the stray population on this beautiful little island.

    HuskyHusky
12.5 years ago I adopted a beautiful 18 month old grey and white Siberian Husky from this rescue organization. I named him Sundance. I have owned and loved Siberian Huskies since I was 18 years old. Sundance had just been neutered, and unfortunately the wound got infected, an ulcer developed and exploded. I took Sundance to my veterinarian who fixed Sundance right up and I cared for him until that wound was healed. Sundance never complained and let me administer antibiotics both topical and oral, and was a champ through the entire process. The Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico gave me the chance to adopt a life long companion that I have have loved, bonded with and cared for his entire life. My heart broke when last Friday, April 24th, Sundance suddenly, without warning, passed away. He had been having some trouble with pain in his hips for which I had been giving him carprofen. Nothing could have prepared me for this loss. That's what hurts so much when you love a dog unconditionally and they give you that kind of love in return; when they die, the pain of loss is piercing. I will adopt another Siberian Husky from the SHRONM, but there will never be another Sundance, and he will live on in my heart forever. Thank you to Shirley Fambrough for bringing Sundance into my life.
  • Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico Logo

Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico

Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico is an all-volunteer, 501 (c)(3) rescue organization devoted to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding new, permanent, loving homes for Siberian huskies, and often, husky mixes that have ended up neglected, abused, or unwanted. We generally take in and place dogs within New Mexico; however, occasionally, we can take and/or place dogs out-of-state. We prefer to work with potential adopters and other husky rescue organizations to ensure matches are found within their state. The organization began in late 1998 when a red Siberian husky that was not expected to live much longer due to her injuries was saved from a local shelter by the organization’s founder. Over time, as Cinnamon recovered from her injuries, she not only survived but thrived, proving to be a Christmas miracle! Thus was born our motto “Saving Siberians, one life at a time.” From those humble beginnings, many more huskies found their way to the organization, where people across NM volunteered their time, opened their homes, and donated funds to support this cause-for the love of the Siberian husky. We are a growing rescue, and our dogs reside at either our homes or approved volunteer foster homes until we make a match with an adopting person or family. We have dog yards as well as dog runs that allow for lots of exercise. We use portions of our homes to teach our rescue huskies how to behave inside a typical house. We offer socialization with dogs and people and interactions around neighborhoods. As they progress in their rehabilitation, our rescue huskies have an opportunity to visit dog parks, attend adoption events and go to pet stores. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered to prevent additional unwanted litters and are given proper veterinary attention and microchipped. The dogs are usually socialized with other dogs so we can determine how they will react around other dogs and humans. Ensuring good nutrition is also part of the dog’s physical healing. Since Siberians, and most dogs in general, are pack animals, we tend to place most of our dogs with another companion dog or with people who have more time at home. We try to avoid situations where the dog is left alone in the backyard for long periods of time while owners work. Also, as a general rule, Siberians don’t do well in small yards or apartments, as they tend to be active, working dogs with a long history of pulling sleds or “working for a living.” There are always exceptions as each dog is unique. Over time, we have seen almost all of our dogs go to some really great homes! Our mission is truly…”Saving Siberians, One Life at a Time”.

I stumbled upon Charleys K9 Rescue when I was trying to help a dog in need of rescue and the rest his history. I became a transporter, volunteer, foster, foster fail aka adopter, and one of their biggest fans. There are not many rescues like this one. In 2023, my family went through a very tough time with the decline of our oldest pittie. They were there for every step of the way with advice, help, and comfort. They even offered to assist/fundraise for vet bills if we needed it. Reese was not a Charleys dog and I don’t know many rescues that would step up like that for a dog that didn’t even come from their rescue. We adopted one month ago from them and to say she has been a perfect match is an understatement. The time and effort they put it in to not only find these dogs a home but the perfect home is unmatched. The PitBull community is lucky to have Charleys K9 Rescue and so am I.

Prairie Paws Rescue is a non-profit organization started by seven Jamestown, North Dakota volunteers who are dedicated to rescuing pets in bad situations. Kaye John, who also belongs to Dakota Rescuers, is one of the organizers. She, as well as the other members of the group, wanted to do have a more local organization that they could be involved with. Becky Johnson, who worked with Kaye John to organize Prairie Paws Rescue, feels that her personal crusade is to save pets from puppy mills - kennels where dogs are raised in substandard conditions - and pounds. She despises the fact that puppy mills frequently kill unsold puppies or older dogs that have stopped producing. Also, animal pounds, as opposed to humane shelters, kill abandoned pets if they aren't adopted within a certain time period. In cases like these, Prairie Paws Rescue likes to take animals they believe they can place and e-mail other rescue groups across the country about them. Rescue volunteers arrange transportation to a group that can place the animal in a foster or permanent home. All this is done by volunteers who do not get paid for their efforts! This team effort, along with thoughtful donations from the community, has allowed Prairie Paws Rescue to save many animals that have become loved and loving pets to local residents.

Important to acknowledge the person behind Husky Halfway house, Jennie Dietsch. Her caring, dedication, transparency, what she has built and is continuing to build for this beautiful breed is remarkable. It takes a community of supporters as well as the people who work along side of you to bring this all together. Takes a very strong leader to get it done and get it done right. Husky Halfway House has that leader along with her crew of harding working people on an off site. They rescue Huskies from shelters as far as Ca who are on the euthanasia list. Just because of over crowding in shelters they have to be put down. She has saved hundreds of lives and found wonderful homes. Husky Halfway House drives all over the country and brings the Husky you have choosen to its new home. This, so they can meet the family spend time with them and their new addition. Husky Halfway House goes over and above making sure the Husky is in the right home and the owners are the right family. There is so much more to this rescue. You need to read her story and see the pictures from the beginning of her journey to what she has accomplished so far and continuining to do. So the Huskies will no longer be "Halfway Home."

In Support of Street Saavy Dog Rescue: Before I met Telani (my partner), she adopted Koa and Kalea (they had other names at the time) back in Nashville. They were both from a troubled litter of pups. Trauma passed on, very fearful and anxiety prone. Both were deemed unadoptable, having been out of and brought back to shelter multiple times. If it weren't for Telani's big heart, knowledge, and incredible patience, they would quite likely be dead today. Instead, they are content to curl up beside or on me, plus do doggie things like run with tails held high, sniff the air, roll in the dirt, and chase critters! Please help Street Savvy Dog Rescue bring dogs in touch with loving families like ours. Thank you, Franko H. in Maywood Park, OR - Supporter of SSDR and is the enthusiastic assistant to Telani Lasoleille, who is the owner of the Cooperative Canine, LLC and board member of SSDR.

    B-squad Dog Rescue

Our first transport was in November of 2014 after the death of Jayla Rodriguez. Dogs were being rounded up with a horse trailer to be disposed of, so many rescue groups got involved to help save as many of the gentle dogs as possible. We loaded our suburban to head to Hot Springs, SD to pick up a load of puppies from KC Willis of LightShine Canine. When we arrived we were nothing short of a hot mess, missing many of the necessary supplies, not quite sure how best to assemble kennels, and fumbling around with the dogs as we loaded them for their ride to safety. I remember feeling discouraged like I had no business in the rescue transport world. I apologized to KC saying that they sent the B-Squad to work with her today. She turned to us and said that the dogs didn't care that we weren't the most organized transport in the world. What mattered was that we were there, doing what we could to help get them to safety. The name B-Squad stuck, and we've transported well over 9,000 dogs to safety since that time. B-Squad Dog Rescue is 100% volunteer-driven. All of our volunteers have full-time jobs, we are hockey moms, photographers, dance moms, professionals, students, etc. We all have busy schedules, but find time to do what we can to help make a difference in the lives of others. B-Squad's motto is you don't have to be perfect to start making a difference today! We aren't professionals‚ we aren't the A-Squad‚ we are just ordinary people doing what we can to help make a difference. We are B-Squad Dog Rescue!

We adopted a rescued puppy on February12, 2022, kept following Proverbs… and adopted another puppy in November 2022. My husband had a stroke in November 2021, Chance Xavi helped him feel happy and not as agitated. He is the perfect dog. Addie came along because she was so darn cute we couldn’t not come get her . We drove from West Virginia to Tennessee to get both pups. Proverbs rescues both cats and dogs from death row, found on the side of the road, injured, surrendered, they care for the health and life of all animals. They also make sure all animals are spayed and neutered so it stops the cycle of overpopulation and unwanted animals. You won’t find any rescue that cares more about their rescues (and their Foster’s and adopters) We share pictures and keep up with both liters.

We adopted our fur baby from here and really like the setup of how things run here . The volunteers are so friendly and work hard caring for the animals and helping potential adopters get to know the animal they’re interested in. I really like how much they post online to help find the right match for animals needing homes. They truly care about the health of the animals too because we were adopting during dog flu and they had a dog we were interested in isolating and went over protocol with us if we still wanted to see the dog. They’re very transparent about what you may run into health wise as far as they and include that in your paperwork. It’s also nice all the goodies such as a bed and treats they include to help set you up if you need them and the first vet visit is free at locations they list in your paperwork. They make me want to come back, but our home is full. I’m glad they post supply lists as reminders we can help in other ways if we can’t adopt.

    Arctic Rescue

Arctic Breeds Rescue has been rescuing animals in Utah and the surrounding states for over 20 years. We specialize in rescuing Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. Many of the dogs we take into rescue are deemed "unadoptable" by shelters or local government and have no other options other than to come to a breed specific rescue who can find them a home where they can be set up to succeed. The purpose of the Organization shall be: To rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome arctic breed dogs in need, including but not limited to breeds such as Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds and mixed breeds of the aforementioned. To provide basic medical care, spaying/neutering, and vaccinations to rescued dogs. To educate the public about responsible dog ownership, including breed-specific needs, training, and the importance of spaying/neutering. To positively impact the community through community and/or youth outreach by sharing the inspiring stories of rescued canines.

The Humane Society of Utah is really good about reaching out to the community if they need help and the community always steps up because they know how valuable the work they do is. If there's a need for blankets, food, or any type of supplies and they mention the need on any of their social media accounts, their shelves are restocked by the end of the week. They also have the best ideas for fundraisers. From bingo nights, to galas and silent auctions the Utah Humane Society is very creative when it comes to raising money and it is how they keep up the valuable community support. Their social media team is quite good and creative. It's fun to see updates of dogs who have found their forever home and see how best to give support to the animals.

We foster to adopted our pup from passion for paws about 3 years ago. She was ment to be with us and is the best pup I've ever had. Robin has invested many years learning best practices to rescue dogs primarily from death row at high kill shelters through working with other rescues where Robin met fellow dog rescue advocate and friend, Tamara, and decided the most effective way to save even more dogs was to establish a new entity in Chittenden County and surrounding areas. Many people who personally know Robin and Tamara recognize their passion and dedication to the dogs. Today, we have an amazing team of professional, highly-dedicated volunteers who help us rescue from high kill shelters, provide safe environments with foster families/adopters, educate the community and advocate for animal rights. Our group is staffed entirely by volunteers and served by a board of directors. Our efforts are supported through donations, charity events, corporate/employee benefit tax deductible donation programs, and the generosity of animal lovers from within the community. Our rescue focus is exclusive to dogs. 100% of all funds received go directly towards saving dogs and are used strictly for this purpose to include shelter fees, boarding fees, medical bills, transport fees, food, supplies, all in support of our mission.

I want to thank the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria for adding love and joy to my home. I am a dog person. This means that from childhood I have love on dogs and need a dog live a full life. When my senior dog passed away unexpectedly, I contacted multiple rescues to find a new forever friend. Most rescues were either extremely expensive, extremely picky, or were first come first adopted shelters. The AWL of Alexandria was friendly, understanding, and reasonable when it was time to adopt "Peppa." The AWL of Alexandria staff and volunteers interview me, counseled me, and helped match me with a great little side kick. Like many rescues my pup had some health concerns by AWL made sure I understood what I needed to do and even made sure I had follow up vet car. Since adopting my pup, I've referred friends and family to AWL of Alexandria. They all rave about the care and kindness shown by everyone associated. Peppa, now Yeti, is the queen the couch. She loves food, espcially treats. She's working on her AKC "Canine Good Citizenship" test. And above all, she is a love bug!

I was a first-time foster for Motley Zoo in Washington State. The shelter was so supportive in helping me navigate fostership as opposed to ownership. Their facility was amazing, they were on top of veterinary issues, provided food and flea meds, and hosted regular adoption events all around the region. Sadly, I am not in a position to foster anymore, but I still volunteer at their adoption events and they are always so appreciative of the help. They are also very mindful during the adoption process and will deny if someone doesn’t have landlord approval or if someone is claiming support animal without medical documentation. They care about the animals and want to set up everyone involved for success.

Motley Zoo Animal Rescue is the revolution of rescue. As a rock and roll-themed, foster-based, volunteer-powered rescue, we take in animals that have no one else. "Animals" primarily means dogs and cats, but as the name "zoo" implies, we take all kinds (as long as we have a foster home/ resources for that species). We work with shelters and owners who cannot keep their pets and through extensive veterinary care and training, we rehabilitate them and place them in loving, forever homes where the animals will never again be abandoned. More than 30% of the animals we take in are special or medically needy and require more extensive and expensive care. In all we work with all ages, breeds, many species and all different types of humans too- treating each as an individual so they can find the life and love they deserve.

I have been helping out The Hope Highway for about 2 years now. They are an amazing foster based rescue in the area that not only helps out death row dogs from the south but also local surrenders which have reached an all time high recently. They are helping families in difficult financial situations be able to possibly keep their fur family members if possible or find new loving homes if needed. They take on many expensive medical situations that many other rescues just don't take the time for. This rescue is one that deserves any help it can and I can guarantee that it will all go right back to helping these dogs that so need it.
