Julia Jones is the owner and trainer behind Guiding Tails LLC, a Tacoma-based dog training business offering in-person services throughout Pierce, King, and surrounding counties, as well as virtual behavior assessments and training sessions for clients outside her local service area. She is an IAABC Accredited Dog Trainer (IAABC-ADT) and Family Dog Mediator (FDM), specializing in fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression, and other complex behavioral challenges.

Julia takes a science-based, positive reinforcement approach to training, emphasizing the importance of understanding each dog as an individual rather than focusing solely on obedience. Her work centers on identifying the underlying emotions and motivations behind behavior, building confidence, and helping dogs and their caregivers develop stronger relationships through trust, communication, and compassion.

Through individualized coaching and behavior modification programs, Julia strives to give caregivers the knowledge, practical skills, and support needed to better understand their dogs and create meaningful, lasting progress. Her commitment to clients extends well beyond their final training session. She believes ongoing communication and support are an important part of the training process and remains a resource for her clients as their dogs grow, progress, and encounter new challenges.

More info about Julia Jones's dog training:

Guiding Tails LLC offers personalized, science-based, positive reinforcement dog training, specializing in behavior modification for fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression, resource guarding, and other behavioral challenges. Services include private in-home training sessions, initial behavior assessments, puppy foundations, basic obedience and manners, loose-leash walking, recall, impulse control, confidence building, cooperative care, and socialization. I also offer structured behavior modification programs, guided exposure and enrichment outings, day training, virtual coaching, and limited in-home board-and-train programs. Training focuses on helping dogs develop practical life skills, emotional regulation, and confidence while strengthening the relationship between dogs and their caregivers. All training is individualized to each dog's needs, using humane, reward-based methods without aversive tools or techniques.

Behavioral issue focus:

Fear, anxiety, chronic stress, leash and barrier reactivity, aggression, resource guarding, low confidence, heightened arousal, difficulty with emotional regulation, compulsive behaviors, and other fear- or stress-related behavioral challenges.

Dog training methods:

Guiding Tails LLC uses science-based, positive reinforcement training methods rooted in behavioral science, learning theory, and an understanding of canine behavior and emotional needs. Training is relationship-based, prioritizing each dog's physical and emotional well-being without the use of aversive tools or techniques. The process begins with a comprehensive initial behavior assessment to review the dog's history, environment, behavioral concerns, and the caregiver's goals. From there, I develop an individualized training and behavior modification plan tailored to the dog's specific needs. Training incorporates management strategies, environmental modifications, desensitization, counterconditioning, enrichment, confidence building, and reinforcement-based skill development. Sessions emphasize teaching practical skills while addressing the underlying emotions and motivations contributing to behavior. Caregivers receive hands-on coaching, written follow-ups, training exercises, and ongoing support to encourage consistency and sustainable progress. My goal is to help dogs and their caregivers develop the skills, understanding, and confidence needed to succeed together.

Why I became a dog trainer:

Julia has always been fascinated by behavior, both human and animal, and has a natural curiosity about the why behind the way individuals think, feel, learn, and respond to the world around them. That curiosity became a passion when she adopted a dog of her own with significant genetically influenced fear and fear-based aggression. Wanting to better understand her dog's behavior and provide the support she needed inspired Julia to dive deeper into canine behavior, learning theory, and behavioral science. What began as a personal journey quickly grew into a career she genuinely adores. Julia is passionate about understanding the individual dog behind the behavior, helping caregivers see the world from their dog's perspective, and finding compassionate, science-based ways to help both dogs and their people thrive.

My favorite part of being a dog trainer:

Julia's favorite part of being a dog trainer is fostering genuine communication and connection between dogs and their people. She loves those moments when a caregiver begins to truly see, hear, and understand their dog, recognizing the emotions, needs, and motivations behind their behavior. Watching frustration turn into understanding and uncertainty turn into confidence is incredibly rewarding. For Julia, some of the most meaningful progress happens when people learn to see their dogs for who they are, rather than who they expect them to be. Helping both ends of the leash feel heard, understood, and supported is what makes this work so special to her.

My #1 dog training tip:

Julia's biggest piece of advice is to get curious about behavior rather than simply trying to change it. Every behavior serves a purpose, and understanding the emotions, motivations, and environmental factors behind it is often far more valuable than focusing solely on stopping it. Before asking how to change a behavior, start by asking why it's happening.
