“I am a very sweet Great Dane, born in June of 2021. I LOVE people and other dogs! I am not aggressive but my large size intimidates some people and other dogs… My “come play with me!” bark can come off as aggressive. Because of this, my owners try to keep me away from other people and dogs that we don’t know, just to be safe. I have never bitten or attacked anyone else, and I am NOT aggressive… just very big! I love my people and love visiting with anyone that will give me a pet!“

“I was two years old and very hungry when I was found as a stray and taken to a shelter. They said I was twenty pounds underweight and had all sorts of infections, so I had to wait for weeks before anyone could adopt me. The dogs around me were so loud and my kennel was so small that I spent most of my days pacing and panting. I couldn't sleep and, even though I was still so hungry, I could eat much. The shelter people gave me anxiety medication, which helped a little. Eventually, my first mom adopted me! I know she tried her best, but I got really scared a few days after she brought me home. She said she had to go to work and left me alone in a crate. I was so terrified that I broke the crate and tried to dig through a wall. I hurt myself, but I was so panicked that I didn't stop until I heard her outside the door. I was so happy when she got home! She was really upset though, and took me back to the shelter. It took a long time for my new mom to adopt me, but she seems to understand me a little better (most of the time). She made sure that I didn't have to be alone for the first few months! It's still scary when she leaves, especially now that I'm alone sometimes, but she doesn't make me stay in a crate. I get to listen to someone Mom calls "David Attenborough" while she's away. His voice helps me take naps so that when Mom comes home I'm rested and ready for adventures! Mom's apartment is pretty small, but I'm allowed to go anywhere I want in it and we go on adventures nearly every day. Sometimes those adventures are scary, though. I like being in Mom's car, but I don't like seeing other cars going fast around me. Mom says that I don't have a "sense of self-preservation" because I bark and lunge at moving cars. She also says I'm "not socialized" and won't let me meet many other people or dogs right now. I don't know what those things mean and I get frustrated when she won't let me run straight at potential friends or bark at dogs as soon as I see them. I think that she wants me to check in with her before I do things like that, because she gives me tasty snacks when I see a dog or new person but look back to her before I do anything else, but it's so hard to remember to do that! Mom is really good at playing with me, though. She is so good at tug that I have to try really hard to get the toy away from her! And she will even wrestle with me now!! When she first adopted me I would get scared when anyone moved their hands too quickly toward me, but when we're playing I know that I don't have to be scared of Mom. I sometimes get carried away when we play, but Mom doesn't get upset. We just take a break and play other games for a while. I'm starting to trust my new mom. There are so many weird, confusing rules, and the world is still a scary place to me sometimes, but I know she doesn't want me to be scared. It's getting so much easier to have fun!“
