Maplewood Farm Dog Retreat | 5-Acre Nature Escape

Welcome to Maplewood Farm Dog Retreat -- a peaceful 5-acre nature escape in south Maplewood near Battle Creek, just minutes from I-94 & McKnight. This is still undeveloped farmland, roughly the size of a city block, tucked into the suburbs, with rolling hills, mature trees, wooded trails, open field space, wildlife scents (ton of bunnies!), and a very different feel from a typical backyard spot. Dogs get room to run, sniff, explore, and decompress -- with off-leash play in the fenced area and more of the property to explore on longer visits. Hoomans can relax in the shade or bring family for a picnic. For history buffs, the property also has the only standing barn in Maplewood, built in 1896 and still in use. QUICK 30-MIN VISITS are great for pups who just need to burn energy, stretch their legs, or take a potty break. The main fenced play area is approx. 60 x 100 ft, with room for off-leash play, fetch, zoomies, a 7-ft spring pole, and the NEW Pup Parkour Platform for climbing, balancing, confidence-building, and play. Lots of balls, frisbees, tug ropes, and poop bags available. Water play includes a popular splash pad, bathing sprayer with doggie shampoo, and a fancy lawn sprinkler with settings for pups who love “eating water” lol! Parking is right next to the gate, with shaded seating and a hammock for the hoomans too -- sometimes suspiciously comfortable. Please remember, you did bring a dog ;) For 30-min visits, please use the fenced area only. The spot is largely SELF-SERVE. Water play should be on and ready when you arrive; please turn ALL water off when it’s not being used and before you leave, since I may not always be home to monitor it. If I’m home, I generally come out briefly to say hello and welcome first-time guests, and only when dogs are in the fenced area. If you have a reactive dog or would simply prefer not to be greeted, please msg me before your visit and I’ll give you your space -- totally fine! Otherwise, don’t wait for me -- come in and enjoy your visit. I keep app notifications on and am good about responding, so msg me anytime if you have a question or need something. For the FULL MAPLEWOOD FARM EXPERIENCE, I recommend booking 1–2 hours. Explore the fenced area, then head through the back gate for a slower long-leash walk through the wooded trails, around the barn and house, and toward the open field. Please remember that outside the fenced area, you’re exploring an active residential/work property, so you may occasionally see me around the house, barn, or property. There are also a couple trolley lines for semi-free roaming; the longer one runs over a road trail. Trolley attachments may be at either end of the line, so check both ends if you don’t see one right away. Signs and a property map in the photos help guide you, but feel free to explore and take whatever route suits you. My pups stay inside during reservations. I live and work on the property, so you may occasionally see me around the house or barn or working in a designated area between them. Any active work area will be coned off -- just give it a little space. This is a natural, dog-friendly space with a manicured feel -- part private dog park, part little nature retreat. Dogs are welcome to explore, climb on logs and wood-chip piles, sniff around, chew or pull on branches, and dig -- even inside the fenced area. I’m not precious about the landscape here, esp since the property may be developed next year. While it’s still here, I want our furry friends to have it and enjoy it. Foster dogs and dogs with physical or sensory challenges are welcome for a steep discount. The spot is open pretty much anytime from early morning to midnight, so you can book around your dog’s energy, the weather, or your own schedule. LED night lights make evening visits easy, and nighttime can be much cooler for pups on hot days. Bug spray available. Supervised campfire use available -- privately message me. As a dog lover and builder, I pay attention to how pups actually use the space and keep adding small improvements and enrichment features as I go. The designated Sniffspot parking area has ample lighting but none in the field. ***please note that Duck hunting has begun. If you arrive early in the am here, there is a possibility of hearing shotguns. You are perfectly safe as they are hunting along the Mississippi corridor but just a heads up for dogs that are sound reactive.***

Our Property Description: Our farm is located just 40 minutes south of Minneapolis in a gorgeous stretch of rural residences. This property is a hobby farm with many resident farm animals including chickens, ducks, geese, goats, barn cats and a pony. Your dogs will have plenty of animal smells to get their noses activated! We do see wildlife including many wild birds, rabbits, and an occasional deer. We have 8 acres total including about 5 acres of partially fenced and fully fenced pastures for our guest dogs! There is a kiddie pool we can set up upon request, we have some agility equiptment in the main fenced pasture/dog hang out spot that is free for you to use! We have seating for our two legged guests and toys that you can use for your pup! Important Property Facts: As this place is our home and a home for our animals we ask that guests please do not allow their dogs to harass our resident animals. We ask that guest dogs not be allowed to potty on anything man made (fences are the exception!). Don’t worry, there are dozens of trees and shrubs for plenty of potty spots! Because our cats free range the property we cannot guarantee your dog will not encounter a cat but the cats are dog savvy and generally shy around strangers. We have 2 fully enclosed fenced areas but our yards are not suitable (YET!) for dogs that are a flight risk as the main fences in our largest fully fenced pasture has had years of horses and goats leaning on the fence causing sagging in some spots down to about 2 1/2 feet in some areas. We do have a few bigger pieces of agility equipment in our personal yard which we ask guests not to use without permission. The large livestock gates do have slats that dogs can squeeze through as well. We are working at this time to create a solution for this! We do have one fence area with small mesh that would be suitable for smaller dogs. Please pick up after your dog. We know it can be hard in some of the tall grasses but we appreciate your effort to help keep our spaces as clean as possible for other guests! Also, our pastures are shared with horses for a few months out of the year. When horses are present manure will be present so we can help you avoid these areas if that is a concern! Lastly, we know we have a few Burrs around so if you spot any please let us know as we do try to pull them. We hope your dog loves our space as much as we do!

Our backyard is a half acre of fully fenced fun! Conveniently located and ample parking. Tons of room to run and sniff! Half of the backyard is grass. The other half is a mix of pollinators and weeds awaiting my picking. It was all buckthorn when we bought the house in 2021 😬 I use natural methods to control weeds by hand picking, cardboard and tarps for smothering patches of weeds as I work on slowly planting the “wild area.” The cardboard is pretty ugly, but it’s very effective in killing invasive weeds. So far I’ve planted more than 150 varieties of perennials 🌻 I haven’t verified that all the plants are dog-safe so please take precautions by preventing your dog from eating the plants. Humans, please try to take care to not trample the perennials in the wild area ❤️
